A scooter is still the most practical and affordable way to explore Bali in 2026. Roads in Canggu, Seminyak and Ubud are often congested, and a scooter can slip past queues that hold cars up. We updated this guide in October 2026 and it covers everything you need to know before renting: the latest price ranges, required documents, the status of the new rule for tourists, how to book, choosing a scooter and area, extra costs, and tips to keep your holiday safe.

What has changed in 2026?

  • A planned ban on tourists renting scooters to ride themselves. The Draft Bylaw on Quality Bali Tourism Business Governance was presented at a plenary session of the Bali DPRD (provincial parliament) in April 2026. It is still a draft — the full explanation is in Bali scooter rental rules 2026.
  • Police checks & electronic ticketing are increasingly routine in tourist areas. SNI helmets and a licence are no longer a formality; learn about electronic ticketing (ETLE) for rental scooters.
  • The Rp150,000 foreign tourist levy per visit (in force since 14 February 2024, paid via Love Bali) still needs to be budgeted for by international visitors.
  • Prices are fairly stable but rise in peak season: July–August and Christmas–New Year. Book early for those dates.

Requirements for renting a scooter in Bali

  • A valid SIM C (Indonesian motorcycle licence). Foreign tourists bring their home licence + an International Driving Permit (IDP) that covers motorcycles.
  • Original ID card or passport for the rental's records. Don't hand over your passport as a guarantee if a cash deposit can be used instead.
  • A deposit as set by the rental, refunded when the scooter comes back in good condition.
  • SNI helmets for rider and passenger (Law 22/2009, Article 106 paragraph 8). Rentals usually provide two helmets.

How to book a rental scooter

  1. Open the Bali scooter rental page and choose your pick-up area, for example Canggu or Ngurah Rai Airport.
  2. Set your pick-up and return dates, then see the estimated price for each model.
  3. Send your area, dates and preferred model using the WhatsApp button on that page.
  4. Wait for confirmation of the available scooter along with the final price, deposit and delivery fee before you pay.
  5. At handover, show your licence and ID/passport, then check and photograph the scooter together with the rental staff (see checking the scooter at handover).

Rent in the area where you're staying so handover and return are easy. Many rentals can deliver to your hotel or villa — read scooter rental with hotel delivery. Can't find your area? Try scooter rental near me.

Extra costs people often forget

  • Delivery and pick-up to your hotel/villa: some rentals deliver free to nearby areas; farther areas cost extra.
  • Fuel: Pertalite costs about Rp10,000 per litre (check the latest price at the petrol station). A 110 cc automatic's tank of about 4 litres is enough for ±150 km.
  • Parking at tourist sites is usually Rp2,000–Rp5,000 for a scooter.
  • Damage, loss & late return follow the rental's terms — read deposits, insurance & damage before booking.

Safety tips for riding in Bali

  • Always wear a helmet, passengers included. Helmet and licence checks are routine.
  • Bali drives on the left. Take care at roundabouts and junctions without traffic lights.
  • Slow down for temple ceremonies; roads may be closed temporarily.
  • Photograph the scooter's condition (scratches, tyres, fuel) at handover to avoid deposit disputes.
  • Avoid riding after drinking alcohol and in heavy rain at night.
