15 Scooter Safety Tips for Tourists Riding in Bali
By the SiapPergi Editorial Team · Published 8 October 2026 · 7 min read

Riding in Bali is different from other places: narrow roads, traffic that mixes tourists and locals, and temple ceremonies that can close a road at any time. Follow these tips to keep your holiday safe.
Before you set off
- Make sure you have the right licence (SIM C, or your home licence + IDP for foreigners).
- Wear a helmet that fits and fasten the strap — passengers too.
- Check the brakes, lights, horn and tyre pressure at handover.
- Save the rental's emergency number on your phone.
- Wear clothes that cover your body and closed shoes if possible.
On the road
- Bali drives on the left. When turning right, watch for oncoming traffic.
- At roundabouts, give way to vehicles already inside.
- Keep your distance from trucks and tour buses, especially on hills.
- Don't use your phone while riding; stop somewhere safe to check the map.
- Give way to temple ceremony processions; follow the directions of the pecalang (traditional village security).
- Watch out for dogs and chickens suddenly crossing village roads.
Night riding & weather
- Avoid riding at night on poorly lit village and mountain roads.
- Never ride after drinking alcohol.
- In heavy rain, pull over for a while — roads quickly get slippery and flooded. Read our rainy season tips.
- Don't carry surfboards or large items without a proper rack.
If you have an accident
- Move to a safe place and check on everyone.
- Call 112 in an emergency if anyone is injured.
- Take photos of the scene, the vehicles and the damage.
- Inform the rental right away and follow their procedure.
- Don't sign anything you don't understand.
