It’s a scene that plays out at rental shops all over Bali: you’ve chosen your scooter, and the owner holds out a hand — “passport, please, I keep it until you bring the bike back.” Plenty of tourists hand it over without thinking. Here’s why you shouldn’t, what the alternatives are, and how to rent a scooter without leaving your passport or a fat cash deposit behind.

Why rentals ask for your passport

From the rental’s side, it makes sense: they’re handing a stranger a vehicle worth thousands of dollars. Holding your passport is a cheap guarantee that you’ll come back and pay for any damage. The problem is that it shifts all the power to them. If they claim a scratch was yours, you can’t exactly leave the country without settling it.

Why you shouldn’t hand it over

  • It’s your legal ID. Foreigners in Indonesia are expected to carry ID. Hotels, money changers, SIM-card shops and police checkpoints ask for it.
  • You need it to fly. Including on domestic flights and fast boats to the Gilis or Lombok.
  • It’s leverage in a damage dispute — one of the most common complaints from tourists in Bali.
  • Losing it is a nightmare. Replacing a passport means a trip to your embassy or consulate in Denpasar or Jakarta, fees and days of waiting.

If a rental insists on keeping your passport, offer a photocopy or let them photograph it instead. If they still refuse, walk away — there are plenty of other options.

What about a cash deposit?

Cash deposits are less risky than a passport, but they still cause trouble: some rentals find “damage” at return time to keep part of it. Typical deposits are roughly IDR 500k–2m for a scooter, depending on the model. If you do pay one, get a written receipt, film the bike at pick-up, and agree in writing what counts as damage. Our scooter deposit, insurance and damage guide explains who usually pays for what.
