3 Days in Canggu by Scooter: A First-Timer's Plan for Surf, Sunsets, Rice Fields & Tanah Lot
By the siappergi.com team · Published · 10 min read

Canggu is where a lot of travellers in their twenties and thirties land first: surf breaks a few minutes apart, cafés on every lane, sunset crowds on the beach and a steady stream of people who came for a week and stayed a month. It is also spread out along the coast, with narrow lanes between villas and rice fields, so a scooter turns three days here from "waiting for rides" into actually seeing the place. This is a realistic plan for a first visit of three days — not a checklist of every café, but a way to fit in the beaches, a proper sunset trip and one bigger ride without spending the whole time in traffic. If you just want a bike, everything is on the scooter rental Canggu page; read on for the plan and the numbers.
Who this plan is for
It's written for a first visit of three or four nights in Canggu, travelling solo, as a couple or with a couple of friends, and for riders who can already handle a small automatic scooter or are willing to practise carefully on day one. If you've never ridden at all, read renting a scooter in Bali as a beginner first and keep day one very short. If you're here for a month to work, the plan still works for your first long weekend; the monthly side is covered in Canggu scooter rental prices.
Two rules shape everything below. First, Canggu's traffic is lightest in the early morning and worst from late afternoon into sunset, so the plan front-loads riding and keeps evenings short. Second, you don't ride after drinking — Canggu nights are the reason a lot of people come, and the plan assumes you'll walk or take a ride-hailing car home from the bars.
Before day 1: the scooter comes to you
Book on WhatsApp before you fly or on your first morning. Send your villa or guesthouse name, the Google Maps pin on the gate (not the main road), your dates and the model. Delivery to Canggu (Batu Bolong, Echo Beach) and Pererenan is IDR 80,000, to Berawa IDR 60,000 — charged once for the whole booking, including the pick-up at the end. Staying in Seminyak and riding up to Canggu? Delivery there is free.
At handover the rider shows you the scooter. Walk around it with them, photograph any scratches, test both brakes, the horn and the lights, and check the fuel. You show your passport (it's not kept) and your licence with an International Driving Permit, pay in Rupiah, and the two helmets are yours for the stay. The whole thing usually takes ten minutes.
The 3-day plan at a glance
| Day | Morning | Afternoon | Evening | Riding (rough) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 — settle in | Scooter delivered; practice loop on quiet lanes | Batu Bolong beach, lunch nearby | Sunset at Batu Bolong or Echo Beach, short ride home | Under 1 hour |
| 2 — surf & temple | Dawn surf or lesson | Berawa or Pererenan, rest at the villa | Tanah Lot for sunset, back before it's late | About 1.5 hours |
| 3 — your pick | Rice-field lanes or the black-sand coast west of Pererenan | Seminyak shops, or an early run to Ubud | Farewell dinner within walking distance | 1–3 hours |
Riding times are door-to-door estimates for normal traffic. Add time in the late afternoon, on weekends and around big holidays.
Day 1: learn the lanes, then the beach
A short practice loop
Spend the first half hour on the quietest lanes near your stay. Get used to the brakes (both levers, gently), turning in tight spaces, and keeping left — traffic in Indonesia drives on the left, which takes a few minutes for riders from Europe or the Americas; see riding on the left in Bali. Practise stopping and starting on a slight slope. Canggu's lanes often have sand, gravel or a pothole where you least expect it, so ride at a pace where you can stop in the distance you can see.
Batu Bolong and Echo Beach
Batu Bolong is the centre of Canggu's beach life: a surf beach with a temple on the rocks and a long stretch of sand. Echo Beach, a little to the west, has heavier waves and a crowd that gathers for sunset. Both have parking areas where an attendant collects a small fee; park where they point you, lock the steering and take the key. For timing the sunset and riding home after dark, read Echo Beach & Batu Bolong by scooter.
On your first evening, choose a sunset spot within a few minutes of where you sleep. Riding unfamiliar lanes in the dark right after sunset, when everyone leaves at once, is the hardest riding Canggu has.
Day 2: surf in the morning, Tanah Lot at sunset
Dawn surf
Mornings are the best time on the water and on the road. Beginners usually take lessons on the softer beach breaks; experienced surfers pick the reef and point breaks depending on swell and tide. Carrying a board on a scooter needs a side rack — if you need one, ask on WhatsApp before booking rather than assuming; our guide to scooters with surf racks explains how it works. Many surf schools supply boards on the beach, which saves carrying one at all.
Berawa or Pererenan in the middle of the day
Midday is hot, so keep rides short. Berawa, east of Batu Bolong, is busier and full of cafés and gyms; Pererenan, to the west, is calmer, with more open space between villas. If you're deciding where to stay next time, scooter rental in Berawa & Pererenan compares them.
Tanah Lot for sunset
Tanah Lot, the temple on a rock in the sea, is the classic Canggu sunset trip — roughly 30–45 minutes by scooter depending on where you start and the traffic. Leave earlier than you think, because the road fills up in the hour before sunset, and plan to ride back in the dark on roads you have now seen once. The route, parking and timing are in Canggu to Tanah Lot by scooter.
Day 3: choose one bigger ride
- Rice fields and the quiet coast. Early morning on the lanes between the remaining paddy fields, then the black-sand beaches west of Pererenan. Gentle, scenic and low-traffic.
- Seminyak shopping and a long lunch. South through Umalas or Kerobokan to Seminyak's boutiques; delivery is free to Seminyak if you move there next.
- An early run to Ubud. About 35 km through villages; start at 7:00 to beat the traffic, and choose a 125–160 cc scooter if you'll ride two-up. See Canggu to Ubud by scooter.
Pick one, not all three. Three days goes fast, and an unhurried ride you enjoy is better than a long day where the last hour is in the dark and the rain.
What 3 days actually costs
| Scooter | Per day | 3 days | 3 days + Canggu delivery | 4 days + Canggu delivery |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Honda BeAT (Gen 2–3) | IDR 70,000 | IDR 210,000 | IDR 290,000 | IDR 360,000 |
| Honda BeAT (Gen 4–5) | IDR 80,000 | IDR 240,000 | IDR 320,000 | IDR 400,000 |
| Honda Scoopy (Gen 4) | IDR 90,000 | IDR 270,000 | IDR 350,000 | IDR 440,000 |
| Yamaha Fazzio 125 Hybrid | IDR 100,000 | IDR 300,000 | IDR 380,000 | IDR 480,000 |
| Honda Vario 125 | IDR 100,000 | IDR 300,000 | IDR 380,000 | IDR 480,000 |
| Yamaha NMAX 155 (Gen 2) | IDR 150,000 | IDR 450,000 | IDR 530,000 | IDR 680,000 |
Prices are our catalogue rates, the same across Bali — Canggu is not more expensive. The cheapest scooter is the Honda BeAT (Gen 2–3) at IDR 70,000/day. Fuel is extra and cheap; a small scooter's tank lasts days of local riding. Extras such as a phone holder (IDR 20,000 for the whole rental) are only added if you ask.
Travelling with friends
For two people, two light scooters are usually better than one bigger one: each of you rides at your own pace, parking is easier and nobody sits on a hot pillion seat for an hour to Tanah Lot. Two Honda BeAT (Gen 4–5)s for 3 days come to IDR 480,000 plus one delivery fee if they come together. For three or four friends with luggage, compare a self-drive car from IDR 310,000/day (Honda Brio) — but parking a car in Batu Bolong is hard.
Checklist before you ride
- Home licence + International Driving Permit with the motorcycle category, and your passport.
- Helmet on and strapped every ride — even to the shop around the corner.
- Phone in a holder, not in your hand; download offline maps of the Canggu area.
- Small cash for parking attendants and petrol.
- Sunscreen and a long-sleeved top for midday; a raincoat in the wet season.
- Bag in the under-seat storage, not hanging from your shoulder.
- Plan rides so you are home before you start drinking.
Staying safe in Canggu traffic
The most common problems for new riders here are simple: too fast on a sandy corner, a car pulling out of a narrow lane, and tired riding at night. Keep left, ride defensively, and expect scooters to overtake on both sides. Frequently asked questions
Is 3 days enough for Canggu?
Three days is enough for the beaches, a surf session, Tanah Lot at sunset and one bigger ride such as the rice fields or Ubud. Many people stay longer once they arrive.
How much is a scooter in Canggu for 3 days?
A Honda BeAT (Gen 4–5) is IDR 240,000 for 3 days and a Honda Scoopy (Gen 4) IDR 270,000, plus IDR 80,000 delivery to Canggu, once per booking with the return trip included.
Can I rent a scooter in Canggu for just 1 day?
Our minimum rental is 2 days. For a single day, a 2-day booking often costs little more than a one-day rental elsewhere, and the scooter is delivered to you.
How long does it take to ride from Canggu to Tanah Lot?
Roughly 30–45 minutes by scooter, depending on where you start and the traffic. Leave well before sunset.
Do I need an International Driving Permit in Canggu?
Yes. Bring your home licence and an IDP with the motorcycle category; police checks do happen in Canggu and around Bali.
Is it better for two friends to share one scooter?
Usually two small scooters are better: easier to park, more comfortable and each person rides at their own pace. One bigger scooter two-up makes sense for longer rides like Ubud.
