Is It Safe to Ride a Scooter in Canggu? Honest Risks, Beginner Tips & When Not To
By the siappergi.com team · Published · 8 min read

"Is it safe?" is the right question to ask before renting a scooter in Canggu, and the honest answer is: it depends mostly on you. Thousands of visitors ride here every day without trouble; others end up with grazes or worse, usually for predictable reasons. This guide lays out the real risks in Canggu specifically, what the law requires, and when you'd be better off not riding at all. If you decide to ride, the Canggu scooter rental page has every model.
The honest picture
Canggu's traffic is slower than Bali's big roads, which helps. But the area packs a lot of inexperienced riders, tourists on unfamiliar bikes, construction trucks and delivery scooters into narrow streets. Most incidents are low-speed slides and knocks, often involving sand, gravel, wet surfaces or a moment of distraction. Riders who keep their speed down, stay sober and wear a fastened helmet remove most of the risk.
Canggu's specific hazards
| Hazard | Where | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Narrow lanes with two-way traffic | Gangs between villas and fields, the shortcut | Ride slowly, keep left, sound the horn lightly on blind corners |
| Potholes and broken concrete | Back lanes in Pererenan, Umalas, Batu Bolong | Look ahead, brake before not in the hole |
| Sand and gravel | Beach roads, car parks, construction sites | Slow down, no sharp braking or turning on sand |
| Puddles and flooding | Low lanes after heavy rain | Avoid deep water; it can hide holes |
| Darkness | Lanes through rice fields at night | Slow down, use high beam where safe |
| Dogs and chickens | Village lanes | Expect sudden crossings; don't swerve hard |
| Surfboards | Everywhere near the beaches | Give racks plenty of space; you're wider with one |
The rules police check
- Licence: your home licence plus an International Driving Permit that covers motorcycles. See international driving permit for Bali.
- Helmet: compulsory for rider and passenger, strap fastened. Two helmets come with every scooter.
- Registration paper (STNK): keep it with the scooter.
- Basic rules: keep left, follow one-way signs, no phone in hand while riding.
Police checks do happen around Canggu and on the roads towards Seminyak and Denpasar. Documents and fines are explained in Bali traffic rules & police checks.
Beginners: should you learn in Canggu?
If you have never ridden a motorbike or scooter, Canggu is not a good classroom: the lanes are tight, traffic comes from every direction and there's little room for error. Be honest with yourself:
- Never ridden at all? Use ride-hailing, a car with driver or a self-drive car for this trip, or learn properly before you come.
- Ridden a little, at home or in Asia? Start on a light automatic, practise early in the morning on quiet lanes near your villa, and avoid the sunset rush for the first days.
- Confident rider? Canggu will feel slow but busy; the main adjustment is the density of other riders and riding on the left.
Your first ride should be in daylight, sober, solo (no passenger) and on a quiet lane — not straight onto Jl. Pantai Batu Bolong at 5 pm. Read your first 24 hours with a rental scooter.
Nights out: leave the scooter
Canggu's beach clubs and bars are a big part of its appeal — and riding home after drinking is one of the most common causes of accidents here. It's also illegal and can void travel insurance. Leave the scooter parked at your villa or in a safe spot, take a car home, and collect it the next day. More in getting home safely after a night out in Bali.
Gear that makes a difference
- A helmet that fits, strap fastened every time. A brand-new helmet is an optional extra at IDR 50,000; whichever you wear, check the size and the buckle before you ride.
- Closed shoes and long sleeves on longer rides — flip-flops and singlets give no protection on a slide.
- A phone holder (IDR 20,000 per rental) so you never ride with a phone in your hand.
- A plastic raincoat (IDR 10,000 each) for sudden downpours.
- Sunglasses or a visor — dust and insects are a hazard on open roads.
Insurance and if something happens
Check whether your travel insurance covers riding a scooter and on which conditions — many policies require a valid licence for the vehicle class and a helmet, and exclude riding under the influence. If you have a flat tyre, breakdown or a minor accident, stay calm, move somewhere safe off the road and message us in the same WhatsApp chat.
Pick a scooter you can handle

For a first time in Canggu, a light Honda BeAT (Gen 4–5) (IDR 80,000/day) or Honda Scoopy (Gen 4) (IDR 90,000/day) is easiest to control at low speed. Choose the heavier NMAX only if you're experienced and riding two-up. The full range is on our scooter rental Bali page.
