Most visitors only see Bali's night sky through the glow of Kuta, Seminyak and Canggu. Ride an hour or two inland or east, and on a clear, moonless night the sky fills with stars — and in the right months, the Milky Way rises over the volcanoes and the sea. Stargazing in Bali is mostly about three things: getting away from the lights, choosing the right night, and planning the ride so you're not doing winding mountain roads in the dark. Here's how.

Where to see the stars in Bali

AreaWhy it's goodPlan
Kintamani & the Batur calderaHigh, cool, wide views over the lake and volcanoStay in Kintamani or by Lake Batur; cold at night
Bedugul & Munduk (the lakes)Highlands, few lights around Buyan and TamblinganGuesthouses in Munduk; mist is common — check the sky
Amed coastDark beaches, sky over the sea, Mount AgungWatch from the beach in front of your stay
West Bali (Pemuteran, Medewi)Far from big towns, quiet coastStay overnight; long ride from the south
Bukit & Uluwatu cliffsOcean to the south, but nearer the city glowOkay on very clear nights; easiest from the south

Getting to these areas: scooter rental for Kintamani, Bedugul & Munduk, Amed and Bali's lakes by scooter.

When to go

  • Season: Bali's drier months (roughly April to October) give the most clear nights. In the wet season, clouds often build in the afternoon and linger in the mountains. Month by month: best time to ride in Bali.
  • Moon: a bright moon washes out the faint stars. Aim for the nights around the new moon — a moon calendar app tells you the dates.
  • Milky Way: its bright central band is best placed in the evening sky around the middle of the year; earlier in the year it rises late at night or before dawn.
  • Nyepi: on Bali's Day of Silence the whole island turns its lights off — but nobody, tourists included, may go out, so you watch from your hotel grounds. See renting a scooter during Nyepi.

Getting there — and back — safely

This is the part to take seriously. Mountain roads to Kintamani and the lakes are winding, mostly unlit, and can be misty at night, with dogs and the occasional unlit scooter. Riding them after dark is much harder than in daylight. The better plan is:

  1. Ride up in the afternoon and check in to a guesthouse or homestay near your stargazing spot.
  2. Walk to a dark place nearby — the lake shore, a rice field, the beach — after dinner.
  3. Ride home the next morning, maybe after a sunrise: Bali sunrise spots by scooter.

If you must ride at night, go slowly, use high beam on empty roads, and read riding a scooter at night in Bali first. Never ride after drinking.

Kintamani and Bedugul get properly cold at night. Bring a warm jacket, long trousers and gloves — the ride up in a T-shirt is fine; the night sitting still is not.

What to bring

  • A warm layer and a rain jacket — mountain weather changes quickly.
  • A red-light torch (or your phone's screen turned to red) so your eyes stay used to the dark.
  • Insect repellent for beaches and rice fields.
  • For photos: a small tripod and a camera or phone with a night mode. A GoPro or camera can be rented — see camera rental in Bali.
  • A charged phone with offline maps and the guesthouse location saved.

Which scooter for a stargazing trip?

You'll be riding uphill, often two-up with bags for an overnight stay. A 155–160 cc scooter is the comfortable choice: the Yamaha NMAX (IDR 150,000/day), the Honda PCX (IDR 150,000/day) or the Honda ADV 160 (IDR 180,000/day) for rougher lanes. Riding solo with a light bag, a Honda Vario 125 (IDR 100,000/day) is enough.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the best place to see stars in Bali?

Away from the lights of the south: Kintamani and the Batur caldera, the Bedugul and Munduk lakes, the Amed coast and West Bali.

When can you see the Milky Way in Bali?

On clear, moonless nights. The drier months (roughly April–October) are best, and the bright centre of the Milky Way is best placed in the middle of the year.

Is it safe to ride to Kintamani at night?

The mountain roads are winding, unlit and sometimes misty. It's safer to ride up in the afternoon, stay overnight and ride back in daylight.

Can I stargaze during Nyepi?

The island is dark on Nyepi, but everyone must stay indoors or inside their hotel grounds — you can look up from there, not ride anywhere.

Which scooter is best for riding to the mountains?

A 155–160 cc scooter such as the Yamaha NMAX (IDR 150,000/day) or Honda PCX handles the climbs, especially two-up.
