Some of the best riding in Bali is along the sea: the road dips to a black-sand beach, climbs to a viewpoint, runs past fishing boats pulled up on the sand. These coastal roads are very different from each other — one is a wide bypass, another a narrow ribbon of hairpins — so it helps to know which suits your experience before you go. Here are six, from easiest to most demanding, with what to expect and which scooter to rent.

1. The east coast bypass: Sanur to Klungkung

The bypass that runs north-east from Sanur along the coast (Jalan Ida Bagus Mantra) is the easiest coastal ride in Bali: a wide, mostly straight road with side lanes down to the black-sand beaches of Ketewel, Keramas, Saba and Lebih. Leave Sanur early, stop for coffee at a beach warung, and come back before the afternoon traffic. Roughly 30 km one way to the Klungkung area.

2. The Kuta beach road and Jimbaran bay

In the south, the beach road along Kuta is short and slow, one-way in places, with surf shops and the sea on one side. Continue towards Jimbaran in the late afternoon for the seafood cafés on the sand. It's more city riding than open road, but at sunset it's hard to beat. Parking and one-way streets: exploring Kuta & Legian by scooter.

3. The Bukit cliffs: Melasti, Pandawa and Uluwatu

On the Bukit peninsula the coast is limestone cliff, and the roads down to Melasti and Pandawa are cut through the rock — dramatic, steep and smooth. The roads to Bingin, Padang Padang and Uluwatu are narrower with more traffic at sunset. A 125–160 cc scooter makes the climbs back up easy. Plan a day: Uluwatu & Bukit beach-hopping by scooter, or rent locally on scooter rental in Uluwatu.

4. The Amed coast

East of Amed the road follows the coast through Jemeluk, Bunutan, Lipah and onwards: small bays full of jukung boats, snorkelling spots right off the beach and a famous viewpoint above Jemeluk bay. It's narrow and winding, with short steep climbs between bays — beautiful at walking-pace speeds. Mornings are clearest for views of Mount Agung.

5. The Seraya loop round the east tip (experienced riders)

From Amed you can continue round Bali's eastern tip through Seraya towards Ujung and Amlapura instead of returning inland. It's quiet, dry and wild, with big sea views — but it's also steep, narrow and patched in places, with few fuel stops. Ride it only with a confident rider, a full tank, daylight to spare and ideally a 155–160 cc scooter. If in doubt, take the inland road via Tirta Gangga.

6. The west coast: Tanah Lot to Balian and Medewi

West of Tanah Lot, the coast is wild surf beaches, rice fields running to the sea and temples on rocks. The main road to Balian and Medewi is also Bali's link to Java, so it carries trucks and buses, and overtaking is common. Ride it in daylight, stay left, and turn off to the beaches to enjoy them. Bonus: the north coast, Lovina to Pemuteran

If you're staying in North Bali, the coast road west from Lovina to Pemuteran is calm and flat, with the sea on your right and hills on your left, past Pulaki temple. Pemuteran is the base for snorkelling trips to Menjangan island. See Lovina to Pemuteran & Menjangan and scooter rental in Lovina.
