Pilots walk around the plane before every flight; motorcyclists everywhere learn a pre-ride check. On holiday it's easy to skip — the scooter was fine yesterday. But Bali's roads are hard on small scooters: potholes, sand, heat and short trips add up. A quick daily routine catches most problems while the bike is still parked outside your villa, instead of halfway up a hill.

1. Tyres

  • Look: walk around both tyres. Any nails, cuts, bulges or flat spots?
  • Squeeze: press the tyre hard with your thumb. It should feel firm. A soft rear tyre with a passenger is a common cause of wobbles.
  • Pressure: if in doubt, any petrol station or roadside tyre stall can check it. Ideal numbers are in tyre pressure on a Bali rental scooter.

2. Brakes

  • Squeeze each lever. It should stop firmly well before touching the handlebar grip.
  • Push the scooter forward a metre and apply each brake in turn — the wheel should stop.
  • Listen: grinding or loud squealing that wasn't there yesterday is worth a message to the rental.

3. Lights and horn

Turn the key (or smart key) on and check the headlight (low and high beam), the brake light with each lever, both indicators, and the horn. In Bali's dusk and rain, being seen matters as much as seeing. The brake light is the one you can't check yourself — ask your partner or use a reflection in a window.

4. Fuel

Check the gauge and plan your stop. Petrol stations are common in the south but thinner in the mountains and the far east and north, where small roadside sellers fill the gap. Never start a mountain day on the last bar. More tips in saving fuel on an automatic scooter.

5. Mirrors, stand and loose parts

  • Adjust both mirrors from the riding position; they get knocked in parking lots.
  • Check the side stand flicks up fully — on many scooters the engine won't start with it down.
  • Look for anything loose: the phone holder, the seat latch, a rattling panel.

6. Helmets

Both helmets: chin straps fastened snugly, buckle clicks, the helmet doesn't rock when you shake your head, the visor is clean. A helmet that slides back is barely a helmet. If a helmet doesn't fit, ask for another size; see helmets for scooter rental in Bali.

7. Check the rider too

  • Slept enough? No alcohol from last night still in your system?
  • Sunscreen on, water bottle, closed shoes if you have them.
  • Weather checked? Rain often comes in the afternoon in the wet season — plan long rides for the morning.
  • Route planned and phone charged, with offline maps as a backup.

If something isn't right

Don't ride a scooter with a soft tyre, weak brakes or no lights. Take a photo or a short video and send it to the rental on WhatsApp with your location. A good rental would rather fix or swap a scooter at your villa than hear about it after a problem on the road. If something goes wrong while you're out, read flat tyre, breakdown or accident: what to do.

Daily check vs handover check

At delivery you check the scooter with the rider and photograph scratches — that's about the condition you received it in (how to check a rental scooter at handover). The daily check is about safety today. Do both.

Frequently asked questions

What should I check on a rental scooter before riding?

Tyres, brakes, lights and horn, fuel, mirrors and the helmet straps. It takes about five minutes.

How do I know if the tyre pressure is too low?

A tyre that feels soft when you press hard with your thumb, or a wobbly feel with a passenger. Any petrol station or tyre stall can check and inflate it.

What should I do if the brakes feel weak?

Don't ride. Send a photo or video to the rental on WhatsApp with your location and wait for advice.

Why won't my scooter start with the side stand down?

Many scooters have a safety cut-off that stops the engine starting while the side stand is down. Flip it up fully.
