The Denpasar–Gilimanuk highway: how to ride it safely
- One lane each way, many trucks and buses heading to and from Java. Keep left, keep your lights on and give big vehicles room.
- Never overtake on bends — the coastal cliffs hide oncoming traffic.
- Avoid riding at night. Lighting is poor and drivers are tired; read riding at night in Bali.
- Turn-offs to the beach are short and sandy. Slow right down where the asphalt ends.
- Fuel and ATMs are on the highway, but gaps between them can be long — fill up when you see a station.
Surf-day tips
- Dawn patrol? The ride from a nearby homestay to the break is a few minutes — wait for daylight rather than riding in the dark.
- Wax and wet boardshorts scratch seats; sit on a towel.
