Ubud is Bali's best base for exploring the island's interior — rice terraces, waterfalls, temples and the volcano are all within an hour or two. Tours cover some of it, but a car lets you start before the crowds and stop wherever you like. The catch is central Ubud itself: narrow one-way streets and very little parking. Here's how to get the most from a rental car in Ubud, what it costs and how to book it.

Parking & driving in Ubud

  • Central Ubud (Monkey Forest Road, Jalan Raya Ubud, Hanoman) has one-way loops and few parking spaces. Use the paid car parks or ask your hotel.
  • Villa lanes in Penestanan and Sayan can be too narrow for a car — the admin can hand the car over at the nearest road access.
  • Mornings are the best time to drive: roads to Tegallalang and Kintamani get slow from late morning with tour vans.
  • Ceremonies sometimes close a road for a short time. Wait patiently or follow the local detour.

More on this: car parking in Canggu, Seminyak & Ubud and driving in Bali.

Staying in central Ubud? Many couples rent a car for the big day trips and a scooter (from IDR 70,000/day) for cafés and yoga — see renting a scooter and a car together.

What you need

  • Passport (shown at handover — you keep it, nobody holds it).
  • Your home driving licence + an International Driving Permit with the car category. See how to get an IDP.
  • Minimum rental 2 days (the daily rate counts per 24 hours).
  • No deposit up front: you pay in full when the car is handed over, by bank transfer or e-wallet, in rupiah.

How booking works

  1. Tap the WhatsApp button and fill in the blanks: car, dates, hotel or villa, passengers.
  2. The admin replies with what's free, the exact total and the delivery time — you know the full price before you commit.
  3. The car is delivered to your hotel, villa or the airport. Walk around it, photograph any scratches and check the fuel level together.
  4. Show your passport and licence + IDP, pay, and drive off. Return is collected from the same address (or another one you agree on).
