East Bali is where the island slows down: fishing villages under Mount Agung, black-sand coves, coral reefs right off the beach and some of Bali's most photographed temples. It's also spread out and thin on taxis. A rental car turns the east into an easy road trip. Here's how to plan it and what it costs.

Best stops in East Bali by car

  • Lempuyang temple ("Gates of Heaven"): go very early; queues for photos build quickly.
  • Tirta Gangga water palace and Taman Ujung: easy parking, lovely in the morning light.
  • Tulamben: the USAT Liberty wreck, reachable from the beach.
  • Candidasa & Padang Bai: quiet beaches and boats to the Gilis and Lombok.
  • Sidemen valley: rice terraces with Mount Agung behind — a beautiful detour from Ubud.

Fuel stations are fewer in the east — fill up before the last stretch to Amed. More in driving costs in Bali.

Staying a week in Amed? A scooter (from IDR 70,000/day) is perfect for dive shops and warungs — see scooter rental in Amed & Karangasem.
