A lot of visitors arrive in Bali planning to rent "whatever's cheapest" and change their minds on the first hill out of Uluwatu with a passenger on the back. Others pay for an NMAX they never needed to pop between cafés in Seminyak. This guide is about the middle-to-top end of the range — the 155–250 cc scooters and the stylish 125–160 cc models people call "premium" — with our real catalogue prices side by side, so you can decide whether an upgrade is worth it for your trip. Most rental sites list these models but only give a price after you fill in a quote form; here every number is published. For the full range, including budget models, see scooter rental in Bali.

What counts as a "premium" scooter in Bali

There's no official category. In rental shops the word usually covers three groups:

  • 160 cc all-rounders — Honda Vario 160 and the retro Honda Stylo 160: more power than the 110–125 cc scooters, still light enough for narrow lanes.
  • Maxi-scooters — Yamaha NMAX (Gen 2 and the newer Neo), Honda PCX 160 and Yamaha Lexi 155: bigger seats, more room for two, steadier on long rides. The Honda ADV 160 adds taller suspension and ABS for rough village roads. The Yamaha XMAX 250 is the largest automatic we rent.
  • Style models — Vespa Primavera and Sprint 150, and the Yamaha Grand Filano hybrid: chosen as much for looks and comfort as for power.

All of them are automatic, all come with two helmets, and none needs a deposit with us. The only bikes in our catalogue with a deposit are big bikes of 500 cc and above, such as the Harley-Davidson — a different category with its own article, big bike rental in Bali.

Where no weekly package is listed, a 7-day rental is simply counted per day (for example Honda ADV 160 ABS: IDR 1,260,000 for 7 days) until the monthly rate becomes cheaper. Delivery is free to the airport, Kuta, Legian and Seminyak; other areas: Kerobokan, Berawa, Umalas, Sanur & Jimbaran IDR 60,000; Nusa Dua, Canggu & Pererenan IDR 80,000; Uluwatu IDR 100,000 (return trip included); anywhere else, ask on WhatsApp.

On a one-week trip, the gap between a Honda BeAT (Gen 4–5) and an Yamaha NMAX 155 (Gen 2) is IDR 477,000 in total (IDR 425,000 vs IDR 902,000). Whether that's worth it depends almost entirely on how you'll ride, as below.

Who actually needs a premium scooter

You'll probably appreciate one if…

  • You ride two-up most of the time. A bigger seat and more power make a real difference on climbs and over an hour in the saddle — for both of you.
  • You're staying on the Bukit (Uluwatu, Bingin, Pecatu). The roads between beaches are short but steep. See scooter rental in Uluwatu.
  • You're planning mountain day trips to Kintamani, Bedugul or Munduk, where long climbs and cooler, sometimes wet roads favour a stable, powerful scooter. See scooter rental for Kintamani.
  • You're tall or a larger rider. Maxi-scooters have more legroom and a roomier seat; read scooter rental for tall riders.
  • You've ridden motorbikes at home and a 110 cc scooter feels underpowered for longer rides.

You probably don't need one if…

  • You ride solo around Kuta, Legian, Seminyak or Sanur. Light scooters are easier to park and filter through traffic, and cost less — from IDR 70,000/day.
  • You're a beginner. Heavier scooters are harder to balance at walking speed, in gravel and in tight parking. Start small; you can swap later.
  • You'll mostly park in narrow gangs. A wide maxi-scooter is awkward in the lanes of Kuta and Canggu.

A practical middle ground for many couples is the 160 cc all-rounder: the Vario 160 has noticeably more pull than a 125 without the width and weight of a maxi-scooter.

The models, one by one

Honda Vario 160 — IDR 130,000/day

The most popular step up. Same easy feel as the Vario 125 but stronger on hills and with a passenger. A good default for Uluwatu or Ubud stays. More in Honda Vario 160 rental in Bali.

Honda Stylo 160 & Yamaha Grand Filano 125 Hybrid — IDR 130,000/day

Two style-led options at the same price: the Stylo pairs retro looks with a 160 cc engine, the Grand Filano is a hybrid with an elegant, soft seat that suits relaxed riding for two. See Honda Stylo 160 rental and Yamaha Grand Filano rental.

Yamaha Lexi 155 (Gen 2) — IDR 130,000/day

A slimmer alternative to the NMAX with a similar engine size — handy if you want maxi-scooter comfort but a narrower bike for traffic. Compared in Lexi 155 or NMAX 155?.

Yamaha NMAX 155 (Gen 2) & Honda PCX 160 (Gen 2) — IDR 150,000/day

Bali's classic maxi-scooters for longer rides and two people, both with a weekly package of IDR 902,000. The choice between them is mostly about feel and seating position: NMAX vs PCX. Both models use a keyless smart key on many units; read using an NMAX & PCX smart key before your first ride.

Yamaha NMAX Neo 155 (Gen 3) — IDR 180,000/day

The latest NMAX generation, for riders who want the newest model. What you get for the extra is covered in NMAX Neo vs NMAX Gen 2.

Honda ADV 160 ABS — IDR 180,000/day

The adventure-style scooter: taller suspension and ABS, good on broken village roads and gravel tracks to remote beaches and waterfalls. Taller seat height, so check you can reach the ground comfortably. See Honda ADV 160 rental and ADV 160 or NMAX?.

Vespa Primavera 150 & Vespa Sprint 150 — IDR 180,000/day

The icons — round headlight, steel body and many colours — with a weekly package of IDR 1,021,000. Popular for photos and relaxed coastal rides; the Sprint has a sportier character. More in Vespa rental in Bali.

Yamaha XMAX 250 (Gen 2) — IDR 310,000/day

The largest automatic in our range, made for touring two-up around the island, with a weekly package of IDR 1,570,000. It's heavy at low speed, so it suits experienced riders. Compared with the NMAX in NMAX or XMAX?.

Licence and rules: the same as any scooter

Engine size doesn't change the paperwork for a tourist: carry your home licence and an International Driving Permit that includes the motorcycle category, plus your passport (we look at it; we don't keep it). Helmets are compulsory for rider and passenger, and only one passenger is allowed. A more powerful scooter doesn't make Bali traffic any faster — the main benefit is comfort and reserve power on hills, not speed. Read the International Driving Permit for Bali if you're unsure about your licence.

Handling tips for a heavier scooter

  • Practise slow turns and parking for ten minutes on a quiet street before riding with a passenger.
  • Use both brakes gently and early — a heavier scooter with two people needs more distance to stop, especially downhill.
  • Watch the width in gangs and car parks. Maxi-scooters don't squeeze through gaps the way a BeAT does.
  • Put your feet down flat at stops. On the ADV and XMAX, check you can do this before you leave the villa.
  • Plan fuel on mountain days. Bigger engines use a little more; fill up before long climbs. See fuel, petrol stations & parking.

Monthly premium rental

Staying a month? Monthly rates make premium scooters far more affordable per day: Honda Vario 160 IDR 1,910,000, Yamaha NMAX 155 (Gen 2) and Honda PCX 160 (Gen 2) IDR 2,260,000, Honda ADV 160 ABS IDR 3,010,000, Yamaha XMAX 250 (Gen 2) IDR 4,010,000. For long-stay tips (servicing, swapping), read monthly scooter rental in Bali.

Checklist before choosing a premium scooter

  • Will you ride two-up, on hills or for over an hour at a time? If not, a 110–125 cc scooter is enough.
  • Can you put both feet down comfortably on the model you want?
  • Have you ridden a heavier scooter before? If not, practise first.
  • Does your IDP include the motorcycle category?
  • Is your accommodation reachable without very narrow, steep lanes?
  • Have you compared the 7-day and monthly totals, not just the daily rate?
