Many Yamaha NMAX and Honda PCX rentals in Bali now use a smart key, or keyless system: no physical key, just a small fob in your pocket and a rotary knob on the dashboard. It's convenient, but confusing if you've never used one, especially when the scooter won't start in a beach car park. This guide explains how to use the smart key from starting to locking, and what to do if the fob battery dies, the fob is lost, or it gets left under the seat.

Getting to know the smart key: fob, knob and indicator

A smart key system has three parts. The fob contains a chip the scooter recognises. The knob on the dashboard replaces the keyhole: you press it, then turn it. The indicator around the knob or on the instrument panel tells you whether the fob has been detected. The scooter will only start if the fob is within range, usually in your pocket or bag as you sit on the scooter.

Smart keys also have an immobiliser (the engine can't be started without a registered fob) and an answer-back function: press the button on the fob and the scooter beeps and flashes its indicators. This is a real help finding your scooter in the car park at Melasti Beach or Ubud market, full of hundreds of look-alike scooters.

Starting and stopping

  1. Make sure the fob is in your pocket and switched on.
  2. Press the knob. The indicator light comes on if the fob is detected.
  3. Turn the knob to ON. The instrument panel lights up.
  4. Pull either brake lever, then press the starter button. The engine starts.
  5. To switch off: stop the scooter and turn the knob to OFF.

If the knob won't turn, the fob usually hasn't been detected: bring the fob closer to the knob and press again. On the PCX and NMAX, the idling stop feature (if enabled) switches the engine off when you stop at a red light and restarts it when you twist the throttle. That's normal, not a breakdown.

Locking the steering and opening the seat

GoalGeneral stepsNotes
Lock the steeringTurn the handlebars fully left, press the knob and turn it to LOCKDo it every time you park, even for five minutes
Open the seat/storageUse the knob position or the dedicated seat button (location varies by model) with the engine offThe fob must be detected
Open the fuel capUse the knob position or the dedicated fuel buttonPCX & NMAX: tank in the centre floor
Find the scooterPress the answer-back button on the fobThe scooter beeps & indicators flash

The seat and fuel buttons are in different places on different NMAX and PCX generations. Ask the rental staff to demonstrate once at handover, while also checking the other items on the rental scooter handover checklist.

Locking the steering is still a must on a keyless scooter. The smart key stops the engine from being started, but a scooter without the steering locked can still be pushed or loaded onto a vehicle. More tips in if your rental scooter is lost or stolen.

Weak or dead fob battery

Signs of a weak fob battery: the keyless indicator on the panel blinks, the fob's range gets shorter, or you have to hold the fob against the knob for it to be detected. The battery is a CR2032 coin cell (3 volts), sold at minimarkets, pharmacies or watch shops, usually from about Rp10,000 to just over Rp20,000. Honda fobs use a CR2032; for Yamaha, compare with the old battery before buying.

  1. Tell the rental first. Many rentals will bring a battery or a spare fob.
  2. If you're allowed to replace it yourself, open the fob casing with a fingernail or a small flat-head screwdriver in the slot.
  3. Note which way the (+) side of the old battery faces, swap in the new one, and close it up.
  4. Press the answer-back button to check the fob works.

The scooter won't start even though the fob is there

  • Signal interference. Smart key fobs work on radio frequencies that can be disrupted by phones or other electronics. Move your phone to another pocket, or push the scooter a few metres away and try again.
  • Fob switched off. Some Honda fobs can be deactivated to save battery. Ask the rental how to switch it back on.
  • Side stand down. Many scooters won't start with the side stand down.
  • Brake not pulled. The starter only works when a brake lever is pulled.
  • Weak battery (the scooter's). If the panel is dim and the starter only clicks, contact the rental for a replacement scooter.

Emergency mode with the ID code

Keyless NMAX and PCX models have an emergency procedure for when the fob is broken or completely flat: entering the ID code printed on the card or tag that comes with the scooter. On Yamaha, the code is entered by pressing the knob in a sequence matching the digits; on Honda the procedure varies by model. This code card is confidential and kept by the scooter's owner, not given to renters. So when the fob dies completely, the right move is to call the rental so they can come out or talk you through it.

Fob left in the under-seat storage

This is the most common mistake. While the fob is under the seat, the scooter may still detect it, so you can press the knob and open the seat again. But it also means anyone can start your scooter. Get into the habit of putting the fob in your pocket before closing the seat. If the seat won't open, don't force it; contact the rental, as some models have an emergency way to open the seat.

Lost fob: it isn't cheap

A replacement fob has to be re-registered to the scooter's system at an authorised workshop or specialist. It costs hundreds of thousands of rupiah if the ID code/card is still available, and can run to millions of rupiah if the control unit needs replacing. Rentals usually charge this to the renter. Keep the fob in a zipped pocket, don't hang it off your beach shorts, and make sure the lost-fob rules are written into the rental agreement, just like the damage rules in deposit & insurance for scooter rental.

Rental prices for keyless NMAX and PCX

Estimated market prices: NMAX ±Rp120–150k/day and PCX ±Rp130–160k/day; weekly or monthly rentals are cheaper per day. Not every unit is keyless, so mention it if you want one. A comfort comparison of the two is in NMAX vs PCX for renting in Bali.

Frequently asked questions

How do I start a keyless NMAX or PCX?

Carry the fob, press the knob, turn it to ON, pull a brake lever, then press the starter button. Make sure the side stand is up.

What should I do if the keyless fob battery dies?

Contact the rental. Fob batteries are usually CR2032 coin cells and easy to replace. If the fob is completely dead, there's an emergency procedure with an ID code whose card is kept by the scooter's owner.

Why won't my keyless scooter start even though the fob is there?

Common causes: signal interference from a phone, the fob switched off, the side stand down, the brake lever not pulled, or a weak battery.

Can I keep the fob in the under-seat storage?

Better not. The scooter can detect the fob under the seat, so someone else could start it, and the fob also risks getting locked inside.

How much does it cost if I lose the keyless fob of a rental scooter?

It can be hundreds of thousands of rupiah if the ID code is still available, up to millions of rupiah if the control unit needs replacing. Make sure the lost-fob rules are in writing before you rent.
