Couples swap who rides, friends share a scooter for a day, a travel buddy borrows it for a beach run. It feels harmless, and it's common — but the scooter, the paperwork and the insurance all care about who is actually riding. Here is what every rider needs, how to tell the rental, and when a second scooter is the better answer.

The short answer

Yes, another person can ride — if they are licensed to ride a motorcycle and the rental knows about them. The person on the seat is the one responsible on the road. Their own licence, permit and insurance are what count, whoever booked the bike.

What every rider needs

DocumentWhy it matters
Valid motorcycle licence from homeRental scooters are motorcycles; a car licence alone isn't enough
International Driving Permit with the motorcycle categoryExpected alongside a foreign licence; see the IDP guide
Passport (or a copy, depending on advice)ID at police checks; your passport is never held by us
Travel insurance that covers scooter ridingUsually conditional on the rider holding the right licence

Rules and enforcement can change, so check current advice before you travel. Details for each document are in what documents to carry when riding and the International Driving Permit for Bali.

Telling the rental

When you book, list everyone who will ride. If a second person decides to ride later in the trip, send their name on WhatsApp before they do. It takes a minute, and it means the rental isn't surprised if there is ever a problem.

Police checks: the rider is the one stopped

At a check, police ask the person riding for their licence and the scooter's registration papers (STNK). Saying "my friend rented it" doesn't help a rider without a motorcycle licence. Keep the STNK with the scooter, and make sure whoever rides carries their own documents.

Insurance: read the rider conditions

Travel insurance typically covers the insured person under its own conditions, which often include holding the correct licence for the vehicle. If your friend rides without one and crashes, their policy may not help them — and the damage to the scooter is a separate question. See travel insurance and scooters in Bali.

Age

Our catalogue requires riders to be at least 17 and hold a valid licence. Teenagers travelling with parents can't take the family scooter out on their own. More in minimum age to rent a scooter in Bali.

Lending to someone you just met

Hostel friends sometimes ask to borrow a scooter "for an hour". Don't. You don't know their riding, their licence or whether they'll bring it back, and you are the one the rental will contact. Offer to ride them as your passenger instead, or point them to their own rental.

When a second scooter makes more sense

If you each want to ride, or one of you surfs at dawn while the other sleeps, two scooters avoid the juggling. Two of the same model for a week:

Two scootersPer day (both)7 days (both)
2 × Honda BeAT (Gen 4–5)IDR 160,000IDR 850,000
2 × Honda Scoopy (Gen 4)IDR 180,000IDR 1,030,000
2 × Honda Vario 125IDR 200,000IDR 1,030,000

The Honda BeAT (Gen 4–5) is the cheapest new-generation option — see its product page. For riding two-up rather than two scooters, read passenger rules on scooters in Bali.
