"From IDR 60k a day" sounds simple until the delivery fee, a second helmet, a raincoat, "insurance" and a deposit appear. None of these is necessarily unfair — but when they show up only at the villa gate, they feel like hidden fees, and they make it impossible to compare rentals. Many sites in Bali don't publish a price at all; you fill in a form and wait for a quote. This guide lists every cost that can appear on a Bali scooter rental, shows what each one is with us (published, so you can check), works out three real totals from our catalogue, and ends with a checklist for comparing any quote. Prices for every model are on the Bali scooter rental page.

Why the daily price isn't the price

A rental's daily rate is designed to be eye-catching. The total you pay depends on four more things: how many days are counted (and whether a weekly or monthly package applies), where the scooter is delivered, which extras you add, and what deposit is held. Then come running costs — fuel and parking — that no rental includes. A quote that looks cheaper per day can easily end up more expensive in total.

Quote forms make this harder: you can't see the price until you've given your details, and comparing two quotes means waiting for two replies. A published price list doesn't stop extra costs from existing, but it lets you work out the total yourself before you message anyone.

The costs that are easy to forget

Delivery to your actual address

Delivery is the most common difference between a quote and the final bill. "Free delivery" often means free within a few kilometres of the shop. Ours is published per area: free to Ngurah Rai Airport and to hotels and villas in Kuta, Legian and Seminyak; Kerobokan, Berawa, Umalas, Sanur & Jimbaran IDR 60,000; Nusa Dua, Canggu & Pererenan IDR 80,000; Uluwatu IDR 100,000 (return trip included); anywhere else, ask on WhatsApp. It's charged once per booking and already covers collecting the scooter at the end — not per day, and not twice. More on scooter delivery to your hotel or villa.

The second helmet

If you'll ever carry a passenger, you need two helmets — it's the law and it's your passenger's head. Some rentals charge for the second one. Ours come with two; if you'd rather have one that has never been worn, a brand-new helmet is IDR 50,000. Read rental helmets in Bali for what to check.

Insurance that isn't what it sounds like

"Insurance" on a scooter rental can mean many things: a reduced amount you pay if the scooter is damaged, cover for theft only, or something else entirely. Before paying for it, ask exactly what it covers, what you still pay, and whether it covers you or only the scooter. We list scooter insurance as an optional add-on; the admin confirms its price and cover for your dates in writing. Your own medical cover is a separate question — see travel insurance and scooters in Bali.

Fuel and parking

No Bali rental includes fuel; scooters are cheap to run and a small tank lasts a lot of town riding. Parking attendants at beaches, shops and temples collect small fees, usually a few thousand rupiah — keep small notes handy. Details in fuel, petrol stations & scooter parking.

Late return and changed flights

A missed return time can cost an extra day at some rentals. The fix is simple: as soon as you know your plans have changed, message the rental and agree a new time and total in writing. See returning a rental scooter in Bali and changing or cancelling a rental.

Damage and fines

Damage is where costs become unpredictable. Protect yourself with a video and photos at handover, and agree in writing how damage is assessed. Traffic fines are the rider's responsibility everywhere — a valid licence, an IDP and a strapped helmet are the cheapest insurance against them. Want to see the totals in your own currency? Bali scooter rental cost in AUD, USD & EUR converts them — remember the amount you pay is always in Rupiah.

How to compare two quotes fairly

  1. Ask each rental for the total for your exact dates and address, in Rupiah.
  2. Check that delivery and pick-up are both included in that total.
  3. Check how many helmets are included.
  4. Ask about deposit: amount, form (cash, passport), and when it's returned.
  5. Ask what insurance, if offered, actually covers — and what you still pay.
  6. Ask about the late-return rule and cancellation.
  7. Compare the model and year, not just the name — an older BeAT and a newer one are priced differently for a reason.
  8. Prefer rentals that let you pay when the scooter arrives after you've checked it.

If a quote is far below published prices for the same model, ask what isn't included. Very low prices often come with an old scooter, a large deposit or fees that appear later.
