Scooter Rental Agreement in Bali: 12 Things to Check Before You Sign or Pay (2026)
By the siappergi.com team · Published · 11 min read

Most travellers spend more time choosing the colour of their scooter than reading what they agree to. In Bali that's understandable — many rentals hand you a one-page form in a mix of English and Indonesian at the villa gate, or simply agree everything in a few WhatsApp messages. But when something goes wrong (a scratch, a late flight, a flat tyre at night), those few lines decide who pays. This guide explains what a scooter rental agreement in Bali usually looks like, the twelve points worth checking before you sign or pay, the red flags, and how our own published terms answer each point — so you have a benchmark whoever you rent from. To book straight away, everything is on the Bali scooter rental page.
What a "rental agreement" means in Bali
There isn't one standard contract. In practice you'll meet three forms, sometimes together:
- A paper form at handover. Your name, passport or licence number, the scooter's plate, dates, price and a few rules, signed on the spot. Usually short; sometimes only in Indonesian.
- A WhatsApp conversation. Very common for delivery rentals. The messages where the price, dates and conditions are agreed are, in effect, the agreement — keep the chat until the rental is over.
- An online order. Some rentals (including ours) let you book on the website and give you an order code; the terms shown on the site plus your confirmation make up the agreement.
None of these is better by itself. What matters is that the important points are written somewhere both sides can see, before money changes hands. A verbal "no problem, same price" is worth very little a week later when two people remember the conversation differently.
Why "before you pay" is the moment that counts
Once you've paid, your bargaining position drops. A delivery fee that "wasn't included", an old scratch that wasn't noted, a fuel rule mentioned only at return — all of these are easy to settle before payment and hard afterwards. That's why we let you pay when the scooter arrives: you see the bike, check it, then pay the total you were quoted. If a rental asks for the full amount by bank transfer before you've seen anything, read Bali rental scams: upfront payment traps first.
Our terms, side by side with what to ask anywhere
Use this as a benchmark. The left column is what any agreement should state; the right is what we publish for every booking. If another rental can't answer a row in writing, ask until they do.
| Point | What the agreement should say | Our published term |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Daily rate and the written total for your dates | Catalogue price, same for everyone — from IDR 70,000/day |
| Length | Minimum days and how a "day" is counted | Minimum 2 days; 1 day = 24 hours from handover |
| Weekly/monthly | Whether a longer package applies automatically | Weekly and monthly rates where listed; the cheaper total is used |
| Delivery | Fee to your exact address, and whether pick-up is included | Free to the airport, Kuta, Legian & Seminyak; elsewhere a fixed return-trip fee |
| Deposit | Amount, when it's paid, how and when it's returned | None on regular scooters; big bikes IDR 3,000,000 at your hotel |
| Documents | What you show, what (if anything) is kept | Passport shown, not held; home licence + IDP |
| Payment | When, how, in which currency | In Rupiah when the scooter arrives — bank transfer or e-wallet |
| Helmets & extras | How many helmets, what extras cost | 2 helmets included; extras from IDR 10,000 |
| Insurance | Whether any cover is offered, what it covers, the price | Optional add-on — price and cover confirmed by the admin in writing |
| Cancellation | Notice needed and any fee | Free cancellation in the same WhatsApp chat |
The 12 points to check before you sign or pay
1. The scooter and its plate
The agreement should name the model and the plate number, and the plate should match the STNK (registration card) that comes with the scooter. If the plate in the agreement and the plate on the bike differ, stop and ask why. How to read an STNK is explained in checking a rental scooter's STNK & plates.
2. Dates, times and what a "day" means
Write down the handover date and time and the return date and time. Most Bali rentals — including ours — count a day as 24 hours from handover, so a scooter received at 3 pm on Monday for 2 days is due back at 3 pm on Wednesday. Some rentals use calendar days instead. Knowing which one applies avoids an argument on your last morning.
3. The written total, not just the daily price
Ask for the total in one number: rental × days (or the weekly/monthly package), plus delivery, plus extras. For example, a Honda BeAT (Gen 4–5) for 5 days is IDR 400,000, and for 7 days IDR 425,000 because the weekly rate applies. That total is what you should pay — not a figure worked out in your head.
4. Delivery and pick-up
If the scooter is delivered, the agreement should say where, the fee, and whether collecting it at the end is included. Ours: Kerobokan, Berawa, Umalas, Sanur & Jimbaran IDR 60,000; Nusa Dua, Canggu & Pererenan IDR 80,000; Uluwatu IDR 100,000 (return trip included); anywhere else, ask on WhatsApp. The fee is charged once per booking and already covers the return trip. For how delivery works in practice, see scooter delivery to your hotel or villa.
5. Deposit — amount, form and refund
If there's a deposit, the agreement must state the amount, how it's paid, and exactly when and how it comes back. Cash deposits without a receipt are a common source of disputes. With us, regular scooters have no deposit at all; big bikes such as the Harley-Davidson have a IDR 3,000,000 safety deposit, paid when we meet at your hotel after you confirm. More background in deposit, insurance & damage on Bali rentals.
6. Your passport and documents
Showing your passport so the rental can note your details is normal. Leaving it as security is not something you should accept: you need it for check-ins, money changers and, in an emergency, at a hospital or the immigration office. Our rule: passport shown, not held, together with your home licence and an International Driving Permit with the motorcycle category. Details in scooter rental without leaving your passport and the International Driving Permit for Bali.
7. Payment — when, how and in which currency
The agreement should say when you pay (before, at handover or at the end), how (cash, bank transfer, e-wallet, card) and in which currency. Prices in Bali are set in Indonesian Rupiah; any euro, dollar or Australian dollar figure is only an estimate. We take payment in Rupiah when the scooter arrives, by bank transfer or e-wallet. If you only have a foreign card, read how to pay for a Bali scooter rental with a foreign card before you book.
8. Damage — and what any insurance actually covers
This is the clause people regret not reading. A fair agreement says how damage is assessed (photos at handover and return), who decides the repair cost, and whether there is any cover. Be wary of wording like "all damage charged at owner's price" with no reference to a workshop quote.
On insurance: we list scooter insurance as an optional add-on, but its price and exactly what it covers are confirmed by the admin for your dates — so ask, and get the answer in the chat before you accept it. Don't assume that "insurance" from any rental means zero cost to you after a crash, and remember your own travel insurance may or may not cover scooter riding: see travel insurance and scooters in Bali.
9. Theft, lost keys and a lost STNK
Ask what happens if the scooter is stolen or you lose the key or STNK. A clear agreement explains the steps (police report, informing the rental) and how the cost is settled. Lock the steering and take the key every time you park. Our guides on a stolen rental scooter and a lost key or STNK walk through both.
10. Fuel
Fuel is not included in Bali rentals as a rule — you refuel as you go at petrol stations. The useful question is whether there's any rule about the fuel level at return; if there is, it should be in writing. Ours arrive ready to ride and you simply refuel as needed.
11. Who may ride, and where
Most agreements limit riding to the person who signed (and whose licence was checked) and to Bali itself. If a friend will ride too, tell the rental first; read can someone else ride my rental scooter?. Taking a rental scooter to another island by ferry is a separate conversation — ask before you go, never after.
12. Cancellation, extension and late return
Check how to cancel and whether there's a fee; how to extend; and what happens if you return late. We offer free cancellation in the same WhatsApp chat. For extending, message before the return time and the admin confirms the new total; see extending your scooter rental. For late returns, agree a time in writing as soon as you know your plans have changed — returning a rental scooter in Bali explains the usual patterns.
Red flags in a Bali scooter rental agreement
- A blank or half-filled form you're asked to sign "to save time".
- Your passport kept as security, or a cash deposit with no receipt.
- Full payment by transfer before you've seen the scooter or its STNK.
- A damage clause with no method — no photos, no workshop quote, just "owner decides".
- A price that changes between the chat and the handover ("delivery wasn't included").
- No STNK with the scooter, or a plate that doesn't match the paperwork.
- Pressure to sign quickly because "the rider has another delivery".
One red flag doesn't always mean a scam — sometimes it's just a busy rental. But it's always a reason to slow down and get the point in writing. Our longer checklist of good and bad signs is in trustworthy scooter rental in Bali.
Prices to check against (our catalogue)
If an agreement quotes a price far above or below these, ask why. Our catalogue prices are fixed and the same across Bali; the full list with photos is on the scooter rental in Bali page.

A confirmation message you can copy
Before you pay — with us or anyone — send a short message that repeats what you agreed, and wait for a "yes". It turns a conversation into a written record:
"Just to confirm: Honda Vario 125, plate DK ____, from 10 March 3 pm to 15 March 3 pm (5 days), delivered to [hotel + Google Maps pin], total IDR ____ including delivery, 2 helmets, no deposit, passport shown not held, payment by transfer when the scooter arrives. Correct?"
At handover: the agreement's best friend
Even a perfect agreement needs evidence. When the scooter arrives, walk around it with the rider and take a slow video, then close-up photos of every scratch. Test both brakes, the horn, lights and indicators. Check the STNK and plate. It takes five minutes and protects both sides. The full routine is in the rental scooter handover checklist.
Checklist: sign or pay only when…
- The model, plate and STNK match.
- Start and return date and time are written.
- You have the total in one number, including delivery and extras.

Frequently asked questions
Do Bali scooter rentals use a written contract?
Some use a short paper form, many rely on a WhatsApp chat, and some (like ours) take online bookings with an order code. Whatever the form, make sure the price, dates, deposit and damage rules are written before you pay.
Should I sign a rental agreement only in Indonesian?
Only if you understand it. Ask the rental to explain each line or to confirm the key points in English in the chat, and keep that chat as your record.
Is it normal to leave my passport with a scooter rental in Bali?
Some rentals ask for it, but you shouldn't have to. We only look at it at handover and never keep it.
Does the agreement include insurance?
Not automatically. We offer scooter insurance as an optional add-on whose price and cover the admin confirms for your dates; ask for the details in writing before accepting.
What if the scooter has damage that isn't in the agreement?
Point it out at handover, film it with the rider present and ask them to confirm it in the chat. That's the simplest protection against being charged for it later.
Can I change my dates after agreeing?
Yes — message the same WhatsApp chat. Cancellation is free, and extensions are confirmed with a new written total.
