Renting a scooter is easy until something needs explaining: where exactly your villa gate is, whether the price includes delivery, what to do when the scooter won't start on a dark road. That's when language matters. Plenty of Bali rentals speak some English, but many work through a mix of voice notes, Indonesian forms and quick replies. This guide explains how renting in English works with us, what to write so nothing gets lost, and how to check any rental's English before you hand over money. Our full price list is on the Bali scooter rental page, in English.

Why English support matters more than you'd think

Most rental problems aren't about the scooter — they're misunderstandings. "Free delivery" that meant free nearby only. "Return Friday" that meant Friday morning to one person and Friday evening to the other. A deposit that was "refundable" with conditions nobody mentioned. Clear written English solves most of these before they start, and makes the rare real problem — a flat tyre, a lost key — much less stressful.

Booking in English, step by step

  1. Choose a model on the scooter rental page — or just tell us how you'll ride and we'll suggest one.
  2. Send one message with the model, dates (with times), your hotel or villa name and a Google Maps pin of the gate.
  3. Get the total in writing — rental, delivery and any extras in one number.
  4. Confirm. Nothing is paid in advance.
  5. Handover at your door: check the scooter together, show your passport (not kept) and licence with IDP, pay in Rupiah.
  6. Ride. Questions or problems go to the same chat.

The fully worked version, with screenshots of what to send, is in how to book a Bali rental on WhatsApp.

Writing a first message that can't be misunderstood

  • Write dates in words: "10 March" rather than 10/03 — day/month and month/day orders differ between countries.
  • Give times, not just days: "from 10 March 2 pm to 15 March 2 pm". Rental days are 24 hours from handover.
  • Send a pin of the gate, not just the villa name — many villas share a name or sit down an unnamed lane. See sharing your villa location for delivery.
  • Say how you'll ride: solo or two-up, town or hills. It helps us suggest the right scooter.
  • Ask for the total in Rupiah, including delivery.
  • Keep it in one chat. One thread with everything is your written record.

Text beats voice notes. Written messages can be re-read, translated and shown to someone else if needed; a voice note on a noisy road is easy to mishear on both sides.

Handover: few words needed

Because the details are already agreed in the chat, the handover itself is practical: the rider shows you the scooter, you walk around it together, film it and photograph any scratches, test the brakes, lights and horn, check the STNK and fuel, then pay the agreed total. If anything at the door doesn't match the chat, message the chat on the spot — the admin can sort it out in writing while the rider is still there.

A few Indonesian words are friendly and sometimes useful — "terima kasih" (thank you), "bensin" (petrol), "ban bocor" (flat tyre). Our useful Indonesian phrases for scooter riders has a short list.

Questions travellers often ask us in English

Most first messages we receive ask the same handful of things. Having the answers in writing before you book saves a lot of back-and-forth:

  • "How much in total?" — the catalogue price × days (weekly or monthly packages applied automatically when cheaper) plus delivery for your area: free to the airport, Kuta, Legian and Seminyak, otherwise IDR 60,000–IDR 100,000 once per booking.
  • "What's the shortest rental?" — 2 days, each day counted as 24 hours from handover.
  • "Do you need my passport?" — we look at it at handover together with your home licence and International Driving Permit; we don't keep it.
  • "Is there a deposit?" — not on regular scooters; big bikes such as the Harley-Davidson have a IDR 3,000,000 safety deposit paid at your hotel after you confirm.
  • "Can I pay by card?" — payment is in Rupiah by bank transfer or e-wallet when the scooter arrives; read paying with a foreign card if that's tricky for you.
  • "What if my flight changes?" — message the same chat; cancellation is free and dates can be moved if a scooter is available.

If your question isn't on this list, ask it in plain English — short sentences and one question per line get the clearest answers.

If something goes wrong

  1. Get safe first. Pull over away from traffic. In an emergency with injuries, call 112.
  2. Message the same WhatsApp chat with a photo of the problem and your live location pin.
  3. Describe it simply: "won't start", "flat rear tyre", "lost key".
  4. Don't let strangers take the scooter apart or agree to repairs before you've told the rental.

How to test any rental's English before you pay

Whoever you rent from, a few questions show whether communication will work when it matters:

  • "What is the total for my dates, including delivery to this pin?" — a clear number is a good sign.
  • "Is there a deposit, and how is it returned?"
  • "Do you keep my passport?" — the answer should be no.
  • "What happens if the scooter breaks down?"
  • "What does your insurance cover, exactly?" (if they offer one).
  • "Can I cancel or change dates for free?"

Answers that are clear, written and consistent are worth more than a cheaper price with vague replies. Our checklist of good and bad signs is in trustworthy scooter rental in Bali, and the terms to look for in scooter rental agreement in Bali.
