Lombok sits just east of Bali, across the Lombok Strait, and travellers often ask which of the two they should pick. They look similar on a map — both volcanic islands with surf, rice fields and beaches — but they feel very different on the ground. Bali is busy, polished and packed with things to do; Lombok is larger, quieter and rougher around the edges, with long stretches of coast where you might be the only visitor. Neither is "better": it depends on what you want from your trip, how long you have and how much you enjoy things being easy. This guide compares them side by side, explains how to combine both, and covers how to get around each.

Who should choose Bali

  • First-time visitors to Asia who want easy logistics, English widely spoken and plenty of choice.
  • Short trips (under 10 days): everything is close, so you see a lot without long transfers.
  • Culture lovers: Bali's Hindu temple life, dance performances and ceremonies are unique in Indonesia.
  • Families: calm beaches in Sanur and Nusa Dua, kids' attractions, villas with pools and good medical facilities.
  • Food, café and wellness fans: Ubud's yoga, Canggu's cafés and Seminyak's restaurants.
  • Surfers of every level: beginner beaches like Kuta and Legian through to the reef breaks of Uluwatu.

Who should choose Lombok

  • Travellers who want quiet beaches and don't mind fewer facilities.
  • Trekkers: Mount Rinjani, at around 3,700 m, is one of Indonesia's great volcano treks, usually done over two to four days with a licensed guide. It closes for part of the rainy season, so check the national park's announcements.
  • Surfers looking for space: breaks around Gerupuk and Selong Belanak, from mellow to serious.
  • Repeat visitors to Bali who want something different.
  • Island hoppers: the Gili Islands are right off Lombok's north-west coast.

Costs: which is cheaper?

Day-to-day prices are broadly similar on both islands — local meals, fuel and simple accommodation cost about the same. The differences come from choice and competition. Bali has far more mid-range and luxury options, so good-value private-pool villas and boutique hotels are easier to find; Lombok has fewer places, so in popular spots like the Gilis and Kuta Mandalika prices for the nicest rooms can be surprisingly high in peak season. Getting around tends to cost more in Lombok because distances are longer, and getting there adds a boat or flight. Bali also charges a separate tourist levy for foreign visitors. For a detailed daily budget on the Bali side, see Bali holiday cost by scooter.

Food, culture and etiquette differences

In Bali you'll see Hindu offerings everywhere, temple festivals, gamelan music and dance performances, and pork dishes such as babi guling are a local speciality. Lombok's Sasak culture is mostly Muslim: you'll hear the call to prayer, pork is rare, and alcohol is easy to find mainly in tourist areas and on the Gilis. Lombok's own food is known for its chilli — ayam taliwang (spicy grilled chicken) and plecing kangkung (water spinach with sambal) are worth trying. Away from the beach, dress a little more modestly in Lombok, cover shoulders and knees in villages, and be considerate during Ramadan, when many people fast during the day. On both islands, a smile, a few words of Indonesian and patience go a long way — our list of useful Indonesian phrases helps.

Getting between Bali and Lombok

OptionFrom BaliRough timeGood for
Fast boatSeveral Bali harbours (e.g. Padang Bai, Serangan, Sanur area)About 1.5–3 hours to the Gilis or north LombokGili Islands, north-west Lombok
Public ferryPadang Bai → LembarAround 4–6 hours, often longerBudget travel, taking a vehicle
FlightNgurah Rai (DPS) → Lombok International (LOP)About 40 minutes flyingSouth Lombok, Kuta Mandalika, Rinjani

Times are approximate and depend on the operator, weather and sea conditions; boats can be cancelled in rough seas, especially in the rainy season. Our Bali to Lombok & the Gili Islands guide covers harbours, ferries and what to do with a rental scooter while you're away; taking a Bali rental scooter to other islands explains why that's usually not worth it.

How to combine Bali and Lombok

Trip lengthSuggested splitNotes
7 daysAll Bali, or 5 Bali + 2 GiliLombok mainland is too much for one week
10 days6–7 Bali + 3–4 Gili or south LombokFly to Lombok if you're heading south
14 days8 Bali + 6 Lombok (Gilis + south coast or Rinjani)Leave a buffer day before your international flight
3 weeks+10 Bali + 10 LombokTime for Rinjani and the south coast

Two tips: put Bali first, so you get over jet lag where things are easy, and don't schedule a boat on the same day as an international flight — sea delays are common. If you're unsure how long to spend in Bali itself, read how many days do you need in Bali.

Getting around each island

Bali

Most sights are within one to three hours of the south, and a scooter is the most flexible way to explore day by day; a car with a driver suits long day trips and families. Our scooter rental in Bali delivers to your hotel or villa. For a trip that ends with a Gili or Lombok leg, a common plan is to rent for your Bali days only — for example a Honda Vario 125 for 7 days costs IDR 515,000, and the scooter is collected before you take the boat.

Five or six travelling together? A 7-seat car costs IDR 360,000–IDR 410,000/day self-drive; a Toyota Avanza for 7 days totals IDR 2,520,000. See car rental in Bali.

Lombok

Distances are bigger and public transport is limited, so most visitors use a scooter or a car with a driver. Read renting a scooter in Lombok for prices, roads and licence rules there.

The Gili Islands

There are no cars or motorbikes on the Gilis: you walk, cycle or take a cidomo (horse cart), and electric bikes have had restrictions. See can you rent a scooter on the Gili Islands?.

When to go

Both islands share a similar climate: a dry season roughly from April to October and a wet season roughly from November to March. July and August are the busiest months in Bali, while Lombok stays comparatively quiet even then. The wet season matters more in Lombok if you plan to trek, because the Rinjani trail usually closes for part of it, and sea crossings are more often delayed by rough weather. In Bali the wet season mostly means afternoon showers, greener rice fields and lower prices — see what to do in Bali when it rains.

Before you decide: a quick checklist

  • ☐ How many days do you have? Under 10 → mostly Bali.
  • ☐ Is a volcano trek on your list? Batur (Bali) is a morning; Rinjani (Lombok) is several days.
  • ☐ Do you want nightlife, cafés and shopping, or empty beaches?
  • ☐ Are you comfortable with fewer facilities and longer drives?
  • ☐ Does your international flight leave from Bali? Keep a buffer day before it.
  • ☐ Licence + International Driving Permit for riding on either island.

Book your Bali wheels

Start your trip in Kuta, Ubud or Canggu, or have the scooter handed over at the airport (cabin bags only). East-coast harbour towns are close to Candidasa and Sanur.

  • Free delivery and pick-up to Ngurah Rai Airport and hotels or villas in Kuta, Legian & Seminyak.
  • Other areas cost extra: Kerobokan, Berawa, Umalas, Sanur & Jimbaran IDR 60,000; Nusa Dua, Canggu & Pererenan IDR 80,000; Uluwatu IDR 100,000 (return trip included); Ubud and anywhere else, ask on WhatsApp.
  • Pay in Indonesian Rupiah when the scooter arrives (bank transfer or e-wallet) — nothing paid in advance.
  • Your passport is shown, not held — with your home licence + International Driving Permit at handover.
  • No deposit on regular scooters. Big bikes (Harley-Davidson etc.) need a IDR 3,000,000 safety deposit, paid at your hotel after you confirm.
  • 2 helmets with every scooter. Minimum rental 2 days. Free cancellation — just message the same WhatsApp chat.
  • Optional extras: brand-new helmet IDR 50,000, phone/GPS holder IDR 20,000 per rental, plastic raincoat IDR 10,000 each.

Frequently asked questions

Is Lombok better than Bali?

Not better, different: Lombok is quieter with emptier beaches and the Rinjani trek; Bali has more culture, food, activities and easier logistics. Many travellers combine both.

How do I get from Bali to Lombok?

By fast boat (to the Gilis or north Lombok), by public ferry from Padang Bai to Lembar, or by a short flight from Ngurah Rai to Lombok International.

How many days do I need for Bali and Lombok?

At least 10 days to enjoy both without rushing; 14 days or more if you want to trek Rinjani or explore Lombok's south coast.

Can I take my Bali rental scooter to Lombok?

Most Bali rentals don't allow it without written permission, fast boats don't carry scooters, and returning the bike before you leave and renting again in Lombok is usually cheaper and simpler. Ask us on WhatsApp before planning anything else.

Are there scooters on the Gili Islands?

No. The Gilis have no cars or motorbikes; people walk, cycle or use horse carts.

Is Lombok more conservative than Bali?

Yes, Lombok is majority Muslim. Dress more modestly away from beach areas and be respectful around mosques, especially during Ramadan.
