Renting a Scooter in Lombok (2026): Prices, Licence, Routes & Why the Gilis Have No Scooters
By the siappergi.com team · Published · 8 min read

Lombok is made for scooters: empty coast roads, surf beaches around Kuta (Mandalika), waterfalls on the slopes of Mount Rinjani and far less traffic than Bali. Public transport is thin and taxis add up quickly, so most independent travellers end up renting a bike. This guide covers what it costs, what licence you need, the routes worth riding and the few things that catch visitors out.

These are SiapPergi's fixed catalogue prices — the same as in Bali, in rupiah, with 2 helmets included. Weekly and monthly rates make a longer stay much cheaper per day.

What you need to ride legally
- Scooter: your home licence must include the motorcycle category (often A, A1 or A2), plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) that also shows the motorcycle category. A car-only licence does not cover a scooter in Indonesia.
- Car: your home car licence plus an IDP with the car category (B).
- Carry your passport (or a copy) and the vehicle papers (STNK) that come with the rental.
- Helmets are compulsory for rider and passenger everywhere in Indonesia — every SiapPergi scooter comes with 2.
- Police checks happen across Indonesia, not only in Bali; missing documents usually mean a fine. Travel insurers often refuse claims if you rode without the right licence.
Licence and IDP rules can change. Check your licensing authority, your embassy's travel advice and the Indonesian traffic police (Korlantas Polri) before you go.
The Gili Islands: no scooters, no cars
Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air don't allow motorised vehicles. People get around on foot, by bicycle or by horse cart (cidomo). Boats to the Gilis leave from Bangsal harbour and Teluk Nara on Lombok's north-west coast, and from Bali. If you split your trip, rent the scooter for your Lombok days only — for example deliver it to your hotel after you come back from the islands. More detail: can you rent a scooter on the Gili Islands?.
Leaving the scooter at Bangsal while you stay on the Gilis isn't a good idea — arrange delivery and collection around your island days instead.
Routes worth riding
| Route | Approx. distance | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Lombok Airport (LOP) → Kuta (Mandalika) | about 20 km | Wide, newer roads; around 30 minutes |
| Kuta → Selong Belanak & Mawun beaches | about 10–20 km | Hilly coast road with steep sections — go slow on the descents |
| Kuta → Tanjung Aan & Merese Hill | about 5–8 km | Easy ride; Merese is a sunset favourite |
| Senggigi → Malimbu viewpoints → Bangsal | about 25 km | Winding coast road with sea views; busy around boat times |
| Senggigi → Senaru (Sendang Gile & Tiu Kelep falls) | about 80 km | A long day; start early and be back before dark |
| Mataram → Sembalun valley | about 100 km | Mountain road, cool and steep — a 150–160 cc scooter is best |
Climbing Mount Rinjani is a guided multi-day trek with permits, and the national park usually closes the summit trails for part of the rainy season. Check the current status before you plan around it — a scooter only gets you to the trailheads at Senaru or Sembalun.
Safety tips for Lombok
- Indonesia drives on the left. Keep left, overtake on the right and expect scooters to pass you on both sides.
- Don't ride after dark on unlit country roads — potholes, animals and unlit trucks are the main risk outside the cities.
- Rain changes everything: in the wet season (roughly November–March) roads get slippery and visibility drops. Wait out a downpour.
- Lock the steering and park in attended parking (a small fee) at beaches, markets and viewpoints.
- Fill up in towns. Petrol stations thin out in the south and east; roadside fuel in bottles is common but pricier.
- Around the remote southern beaches, ride in daylight and keep valuables out of sight on the scooter.
- Respect local customs: Lombok is mostly Muslim — dress modestly away from the beaches, especially near mosques and during Ramadan.
Scooter, car or driver?
A scooter is ideal for couples and solo travellers. Families or groups doing the long day trips (Senaru, Sembalun, Pink Beach) are more comfortable in a car: self-drive cars start at IDR 310,000/day, 7-seaters IDR 360,000–IDR 410,000 — see car rental in Lombok.
