Dirt Bike Rental in Bali: KLX 150 Guide, Routes & Rules
By the siappergi.com team · Published · 6 min read · Baca dalam Bahasa Indonesia

Most rental bikes in Bali are automatic scooters. Yet some of the island's best roads are rocky village lanes, climbs on mountain slopes and dirt tracks to hidden beaches. On that kind of terrain, a dirt bike like the Kawasaki KLX 150 feels far more confident. This guide helps you decide whether you really need a dirt bike, where to take it, and what to check before you take the keys.
Why do people rent dirt bikes in Bali?
110–160 cc automatics are designed for tarmac. Their wheels are small (usually 14 inches), their suspension is short and their ground clearance is low, so they easily hit rocks or get stuck in potholes. A dirt bike has big wheels with knobby dual-purpose tyres, long suspension and an upright riding position. As a result, it is more stable on broken roads, volcanic sand and rocky climbs.
Practical specs: KLX 150 vs an automatic
| Aspect | Kawasaki KLX 150 | 125 cc automatic (e.g. Vario 125) |
|---|---|---|
| Engine | 144 cc, air-cooled | 124.8 cc, liquid-cooled |
| Transmission | 5-speed manual, hand clutch | Automatic (CVT) |
| Seat height | about 865 mm (standard version); some versions are lower | Much lower, feet reach the ground easily |
| Weight | about 118 kg | about 112 kg |
| Tank | about 6.9 litres | 5.5 litres |
| Storage | None | 18 litres under the seat |
| Tyres | Dual-purpose, large wheels | Road tyres, 14-inch wheels |
| Estimated market rental | Rp180–250k/day | Rp75–100k/day |
Specifications can vary slightly between versions and model years. The tall seat is the first thing to test: sit on the bike at handover and make sure at least the balls of your feet can rest steadily on the ground.
Who is it for?
It suits you if you…
- Are already comfortable on a bike with a clutch and have ridden on dirt or rocky roads.
- Plan to ride village roads in Karangasem, Kintamani, Buleleng or the mountains of West Bali.
- Travel solo with light luggage (a backpack).
- Want to reach steep, broken beach access roads that defeat automatics.
It does not suit you if you…
- Have never used a clutch. Bali is not the place to learn to ride a manual.
- Plan long rides with a passenger, as a dirt bike's seat is narrow and hard for the pillion.
- Only ride around Canggu, Seminyak or Kuta. An automatic is nimbler in traffic and easier to park.
- Need to carry a suitcase or surfboard.
If you are unsure, compare models in the best scooters for touring Bali. For paved climbs such as Kintamani and Bedugul, an NMAX scooter is more than enough.
Sensible routes for a dirt bike
| Area | Road character | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Sidemen and the slopes of Mount Agung (Karangasem) | Narrow tarmac, partly broken, steep climbs | Rice field and mountain views. Take care on wet roads |
| Batur lava fields, Kintamani | Volcanic sand and rock | Enter via official tracks and follow local rules. Safer with a local guide |
| Munduk – Lake Tamblingan (Buleleng) | Climbs, narrow foggy roads | Cool, often rainy from midday |
| Pupuan and West Bali plantations | Winding roads through coffee and clove plantations | Quiet, few petrol stations |
| Beach access on the Bukit (Uluwatu) | Steep descents, some dirt sections | Park at the top if the road is wet |
A dirt bike is not a licence to leave the road. Do not ride onto rice field banks and subak irrigation channels, protected forest, national park land or private property. Besides causing damage, it can get you into trouble with locals and the authorities. Stick to village roads that vehicles actually use. For paved route ideas, see the Ubud–Kintamani scooter route and the East Bali–Lempuyang scooter route.
Requirements, documents and cover
- SIM C (Indonesian motorcycle licence) covers motorcycles up to 250 cc, so a KLX 150 only needs a SIM C. Foreign visitors need an international driving permit that includes the motorcycle category, together with their home licence. Full details in requirements for renting a scooter in Bali.
- Helmet: ask whether the rental provides a full-face or motocross helmet. A half-face helmet is not ideal on rocky roads.
- Deposit and damage: dirt bikes often tip over at low speed on slippery ground. Broken clutch or brake levers, cracked mirrors and broken lights are common damage. Ask for the replacement costs up front and read deposits, insurance & damage.
- Off-road use is often excluded from damage cover. Ask for a written explanation via WhatsApp.
Quick technique if you usually ride an automatic
- Practise the clutch and gear changes on a quiet road for 10–15 minutes before joining traffic.
- Start steep climbs in 1st or 2nd gear. Do not change gear halfway up a rocky climb.
- On descents, use engine braking in a low gear, helped by smooth use of the rear and front brakes.
- On broken roads, stand on the footpegs with your knees slightly bent and look far ahead.
- In volcanic sand, keep the throttle steady. Shutting it suddenly makes the front wheel dig in.
Check the bike before accepting it
- Chain: tension, lubrication and sprocket condition. A loose chain can come off on a climb.
- Tyres: the knobbly tread is still deep and the rubber is not cracked.
- Brakes and clutch: levers are not bent and the clutch does not slip when you open the throttle.
- Lights and horn: some dirt bikes have dim headlights, so plan to be back before dark.
- Starting: make sure the bike starts easily, with the electric starter and the kick-starter if it has one.
A general handover checklist is in checking a rental scooter at handover.
The tank of about 6.9 litres is enough for a day of exploring, but fill up at the last town petrol station before heading into the mountains. Upland villages usually only have roadside fuel of uncertain quality.
Prices and how to book
There are fewer dirt bikes than automatics, so book early, especially in peak season. See availability and estimated prices on the KLX rental in Bali page, or compare all bike types at Bali scooter rental. When you book via WhatsApp, mention your planned route so the rental can explain its rules from the start.

Frequently asked questions
Is a SIM C enough for a KLX 150?
Yes. The SIM C covers motorcycles up to 250 cc, and the KLX 150 has a 144 cc engine. Foreign visitors need an international driving permit with the motorcycle category plus their home licence.
How much does it cost to rent a dirt bike in Bali?
The estimated market price for a KLX 150 is around Rp180–250k per day, depending on the bike's condition and the rental length. The exact price is on the rental page.
Can I take a dirt bike off-road?
Yes, on village roads and tracks that vehicles actually use. But many rentals exclude off-road damage from their cover, and riding into rice fields, protected forest or national parks is not allowed.
Is a KLX comfortable with a passenger?
Not for long distances, because the seat is narrow and high. For two people, a scooter such as an NMAX or PCX is more comfortable.
I have never ridden a bike with a clutch. Can I rent a KLX?
Better not. Learning to use a clutch on Bali's busy, hilly roads is risky. Choose an automatic scooter, and book a guided dirt bike tour if you want to try off-road riding.
