Jalan Kayu Aya — also signed as Jalan Laksmana, and nicknamed Eat Street — is the restaurant strip at the centre of Seminyak: one long road of restaurants, bars, cafés and boutiques running towards Petitenget and the beach. For a lot of travellers, a Seminyak holiday is built around it: a lazy day, a beach club in the afternoon, dinner on Eat Street. A scooter makes that rhythm easier — and also brings the rest of Bali within reach — but evenings on Jalan Kayu Aya need a little planning. This guide covers getting there, parking, the routes around it and how to get home safely. For prices and booking, go to scooter rental Seminyak.

Jalan Kayu Aya in a nutshell

Seminyak grew up around a few roads near the beach, and Jalan Kayu Aya is the one most visitors know. It's lined with restaurants of every kind, from Indonesian to international, plus bars, dessert shops and fashion and homeware boutiques, many of them in open-fronted buildings with a small parking strip outside. At its northern end the area merges into Petitenget; to the south and east, side roads connect to the rest of Seminyak and on towards Legian. In the daytime it's a shopping street; in the evening it's a dining street.

Because so much happens here after dark, the road changes character across the day. Mornings are quiet, afternoons steady, and evenings slow and crowded, with cars dropping people off, scooters looking for a place to park and lots of people on foot. Plan around that and riding here is easy.

When Eat Street is busiest

TimeWhat it's likeScooter tip

Midday to 16:00Steady shopping trafficParking usually available with an attendant

18:00 to 22:00Dinner rush; cars stopping, crowds on footArrive before 18:30 or walk from nearby
After 22:00Bars busy, dining quieterDon't ride if you've been drinking

These are typical patterns, not fixed rules; weekends, holidays and events change them.

Getting there: free delivery and short rides

If you stay in Seminyak, delivery and pick-up are free, so the scooter starts and ends at your door. Many villas and hotels are a short ride — sometimes a short walk — from Jalan Kayu Aya. For the first evening, ride the route once in daylight, so you know which side roads lead where and where the place you want to eat has its parking.

Coming from elsewhere? From Legian and Kuta it's a short ride north; from Canggu, the usual route is through Kerobokan or the Umalas lanes and takes longer in the late afternoon; from the airport, see Bali Airport to Seminyak by scooter. Delivery is free to Kuta, Legian and the airport too.

Parking on and around Jalan Kayu Aya

  1. Park where the attendant points. Most restaurants and shops have a strip out front managed by a parking attendant who collects a small fee. Pay it — they keep an eye on the bikes.
  2. Keep out of driveways and villa gates. Blocking an entrance is the fastest way to have your scooter moved or get an earful.
  3. Lock the steering and take the key. Leave nothing on the seat or in the front pocket.
  4. Photograph where you parked if you're walking along the strip; rows of similar scooters look the same at night.
  5. Full outside a popular place? Park a little way down a quieter side road and walk the last few minutes.

Parking at beach clubs, cafés and the beach itself is covered in more detail in scooter parking in Canggu & Seminyak.

Book dinner for 18:00 or for after 21:00, and you avoid the worst of both the traffic and the parking. Or walk: from many Seminyak villas, Eat Street is closer on foot than it looks on the map.

Routes around Seminyak

Seminyak's roads are a tight network rather than a grid, and some run one-way in parts. A few patterns make life easier:

  • Jalan Kayu Aya ↔ Petitenget. The strip continues into Petitenget, where many beach clubs and newer restaurants are. Ride slowly; people cross everywhere.
  • Seminyak ↔ Legian & Kuta. South via the roads parallel to the coast; expect one-way sections and loops near Legian.
  • Seminyak ↔ Canggu. North through Kerobokan or Umalas; quiet in the morning, slow in the late afternoon.
  • Avoiding the centre. Sunset Road, east of Seminyak, is a wider main road that can be quicker for longer trips south — busy, so stay alert.

Google Maps handles the one-way sections well if you set it to two-wheeler mode where available. For trips further afield, scooter day trips from Seminyak has five good ones.

Beach clubs, dinner and getting home

Seminyak's beach clubs are part of the appeal, and they usually go hand in hand with drinks. The rule is simple: if you'll drink, don't ride. Leave the scooter at your villa and walk or take a ride-hailing car or taxi to the club and back to Eat Street. If you rode and then decided to stay for drinks, leave the scooter where it is if parking allows, and collect it the next morning — check with the attendant or venue first. There's no delivery fee to Seminyak and no deposit on regular scooters; you pay in Rupiah when the scooter arrives. Optional extras: a brand-new helmet IDR 50,000 and a phone holder IDR 20,000 for the whole rental. For a full day of shops rather than dinner, see Seminyak shopping by scooter.

Rainy evenings on Eat Street

In the wet season, roughly November to March, heavy showers often arrive in the afternoon or evening and can turn Seminyak's lower roads into shallow streams for a while. If it's pouring when you want to leave for dinner, wait twenty minutes — most storms ease off quickly. If you must ride, slow right down: painted road markings, metal drain covers and the edges of puddles are slippery, and drivers see less. A plastic raincoat (optional extra, IDR 10,000 each) lives happily under the seat for the whole trip. And if the rain sets in for the night, it's a good evening to walk to somewhere close, or to leave the scooter and take a car.

Evening riding checklist

  • Ride the route once in daylight before your first dinner.
  • Helmets on and strapped — both of you.
  • Small notes for the parking attendant.
  • Bag in the seat storage; phone in a holder.
  • Headlight on, visor clean, sunglasses off after sunset.
  • Decide before you leave: riding home, or drinking — not both.
  • Save your villa as a pin in your maps app for the ride home.
