Totals use the weekly rate where the catalogue has one. Fuel and parking are extra for both options; a car uses more fuel, and parking a car in busy centres such as Canggu or Ubud takes more time than parking a scooter.
Question 1: how old are the kids?
This decides more than the budget does. Babies and toddlers can't sit securely on a scooter and need a proper child seat — that means a car. We rent a baby car seat alongside the car; see car rental with a baby seat.
Older children who can sit upright, hold on, reach the footrests and wear a properly fitting helmet are sometimes carried as passengers by local families. Question 2: do both parents hold motorcycle licences?
Two scooters need two licensed riders, each with an International Driving Permit that covers motorcycles. If only one parent rides, two scooters doesn't work; the realistic options are a car, or a car plus one scooter for solo trips.
Question 3: where are you going?
- Mostly beach days around one base (Sanur, Seminyak, Canggu): short trips; scooters work for older kids, a small car is easier with beach gear.
- Day trips to Ubud, Kintamani or the north: long rides in heat or rain are hard on children as passengers. A car wins.
- Airport day with four suitcases: a scooter can't carry them. Have the car meet you, or book an airport transfer.

A common plan is a 7-seater for the whole stay plus one scooter for a parent to grab breakfast or surf at sunrise.
