Scooter Rental in Sanur for a Slow, Relaxed Stay: Easy Automatic Scooters, Quiet Routes & the Beach Path
By the siappergi.com team · Published · 10 min read

Sanur is the part of south Bali that never tried to compete with Kuta or Canggu. It's a long, sheltered east-coast beach with a reef offshore, a paved beachfront path, sunrise instead of sunset crowds and a main street of restaurants and shops that stays relaxed at night. That's why it draws couples, families, repeat visitors who've done the busy parts of Bali, and older travellers who come back every year for weeks at a time. A scooter fits this kind of stay perfectly — short, easy rides at your own pace — as long as you pick the right bike and the right times. For prices and booking, go to scooter rental Sanur.
Why Sanur suits a slower trip
Most of what you need in Sanur is within a few kilometres: the beach, cafés, supermarkets, pharmacies and clinics, the night market and the harbour for boats to Nusa Penida and Lembongan. The main street, Jalan Danau Tamblingan, runs parallel to the beach, with quieter lanes on both sides. The waves inside the reef are gentle, which is why Sanur is also popular with families (see family-friendly beaches in Bali).
The pace changes your scooter needs, too. You don't need power for steep hills or speed for long highway rides; you need a scooter that is light, easy to get on and off, comfortable for short hops and stable at low speed. And you can choose when you ride — mornings, mostly — instead of fighting rush hour.

All our scooters are automatics — no gears or clutch, just throttle and two brake levers. For relaxed riding around Sanur, a light 110–125 cc scooter like the Honda Scoopy (Gen 4) or Yamaha Fazzio 125 Hybrid is the easiest to handle, park and push. The Honda Vario 125 has more power for trips to Ubud or Uluwatu. Riding two-up a lot? The Yamaha Grand Filano 125 Hybrid has a comfortable seat for the passenger. The full range is on our Bali scooter rental page.
If you're not sure which is right, tell the admin on WhatsApp your height, whether you'll ride with a passenger and how far you plan to go — they'll suggest a model. Over 50 and returning to riding after a break? Renting a scooter in Bali over 50 covers comfort and safety in detail.
The beach path: walk it, don't ride it
Sanur's beachfront path runs for several kilometres along the shore, past hotels, beach warungs and the fishing boats. It's for people on foot and on bicycles, and it's one of the nicest early-morning walks in Bali. Scooters don't belong on it: ride to one of the beach access roads off Jalan Danau Tamblingan, park where the attendant shows you, and walk or cycle along the shore from there.
For a sunrise walk, ride to the beach just before first light, when the roads are empty, park at an access road and walk the path as the sun comes up over the sea. Ride home before the morning traffic starts.
Quiet routes around Sanur
| Ride | Rough riding time | Why go |
|---|---|---|
| Along Jalan Danau Tamblingan | Minutes | Cafés, shops and beach access roads |
| Sanur night market (Sindhu) | Under 10 minutes | Local food in the evening; easy parking nearby |
| Sanur Harbour | Under 10 minutes | Boats to Nusa Penida & Lembongan |
| Mertasari & the south end of the beach | 10–15 minutes | Quieter beach and kitesurfing season |
| Serangan (via the causeway) | 20–30 minutes | A small island joined to Bali by road |
| Ubud | About an hour | About 25 km; go early |
Times are door-to-door estimates in normal traffic. The night market and food stalls are in Bali night markets by scooter; for Ubud, Sanur to Ubud by scooter describes the route via Celuk, Sukawati and Mas.
The bypass: the one busy road
Sanur sits beside the Ngurah Rai Bypass, the main road between the airport, Nusa Dua, Sanur and the east. It's wide and fast with heavy traffic, trucks and busy junctions. For local riding you rarely need it — the lanes inside Sanur connect almost everything. When you do use it, ride in the left lane, keep a steady speed and cross at traffic lights rather than making quick U-turns. Avoid it at the morning and late-afternoon peaks.
Parking in Sanur
- Hotels and villas usually have guest parking — ask at check-in.
- Beach access roads, shops and restaurants have parking attendants who collect a small fee; it's normal and they watch the bikes.
- The harbour has its own parking; see scooter parking at the airport and harbours before a day trip to the islands.
- Always lock the steering, take the key and leave nothing on the scooter.

Scooter, car, or both?
A scooter is perfect for the short hops of daily life in Sanur. For days out with luggage, grandchildren or in the rainy season, a self-drive car from IDR 310,000/day (Honda Brio) is more comfortable and Sanur has easier car parking than Canggu or Seminyak. Some long-stayers keep a scooter for the month and add a car for a couple of days; ask on WhatsApp and the admin will quote both. Day trip ideas from Sanur — Ubud, Nusa Dua, Klungkung and the east coast — are in scooter day trips from Sanur.
Comfort and safety for relaxed riders
- Ride in the morning. Cooler, quieter and the light is better. Midday heat is tiring even on short rides.
- Keep it short. An hour of riding is plenty for a relaxed day; plan a coffee stop on anything longer.
- Rain plans. In the wet season (roughly November to March), afternoon storms are common; wait them out rather than riding through.
- Helmet always strapped, with a clear visor or glasses; a brand-new helmet is available if you prefer.
- Licence and IDP. Bring your home licence and an International Driving Permit with the motorcycle category — required for visitors, whatever your age.
- Travel insurance. Check that your policy covers riding a scooter in Bali, with the licence you hold.
Island days from Sanur Harbour
Many people staying in Sanur take at least one day trip by fast boat to Nusa Penida or Nusa Lembongan. The harbour is a short ride from most hotels, so you can ride there, park and pick the scooter up again on your return. Arrive in good time before your boat, take only a small bag, and leave helmets locked under the seat if they fit. Don't take your rental scooter on the boat to the islands — ride your Bali scooter in Bali, and arrange transport on the islands separately. If friends are coming from Canggu to join a boat trip, Canggu to Sanur Harbour by scooter shows them the route.
