The rainy season doesn't empty Canggu — it's still sunny for much of most days — but it changes how the area rides. Canggu is flat and full of rice fields, drains and narrow lanes, so a tropical downpour can turn some roads into wide puddles that hide the potholes underneath. With a few habits, you can keep riding comfortably all season.

What heavy rain does in Canggu

  • Water collects in low spots on lanes and beach roads, sometimes across the full width of the road.
  • Puddles hide potholes, drain covers and broken edges — the main hazard, more than the water itself.
  • Sand and mud wash onto beach roads, and painted lines and metal plates get slippery.
  • Traffic slows down everywhere at once, so normal short rides take longer.

Conditions vary from storm to storm and year to year, and road repairs change things. Treat any stretch of water you can't see through as unknown, and check with your villa host or locals about lanes that are known to flood near you.

A simple rain routine

  1. If it's pouring, wait. Heavy tropical showers often ease within an hour or two — have a coffee rather than ride through the worst.
  2. Ride slower than usual and leave twice the gap; brakes need more distance on wet roads.
  3. Avoid riding through deep water. If you must cross a puddle, go slowly in a straight line without braking hard in the middle.
  4. After dark in the rain, stick to main roads with lights rather than unlit lanes through the rice fields.
  5. If the engine gets wet and struggles, stop somewhere safe and message the admin rather than forcing it.

Morning rain is less common than afternoon and evening storms in many wet-season weeks, so early rides are often the driest — though Bali's weather never follows a strict timetable.

Keep your phone in a zip bag inside your pocket or backpack. A phone holder is great for navigation, but put the phone away when the rain gets heavy.

Any well-maintained scooter is fine if you ride sensibly. If you're staying down rough lanes in Pererenan, Seseh or Umalas, the Honda ADV 160 with its taller suspension feels calmer over broken, wet surfaces; the Yamaha NMAX is a steady two-up choice on main roads. All are priced as in our scooter rental Bali catalogue, from IDR 70,000/day.

Plan B for very wet days

Booking a scooter in Canggu in the wet season
