One Night in Kuta or Tuban Between Flights: Is a Scooter Worth It?
By the siappergi.com team · Published · 7 min read

Bali is a common stopover: a late arrival before a morning ferry or domestic flight, a break on the way between Australia and Europe, or a deliberate night or two before heading to Ubud or the Gilis. The airport sits in Tuban, inside the Kuta district, so the nearest hotels are minutes away. The question is whether you need wheels at all. Here's an honest answer, including when a scooter is not worth it.
Where to sleep near Ngurah Rai Airport
| Area | What it's like | To the terminal (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| Tuban | Hotels and malls around Jl. Kartika Plaza, beach in front, family-friendly | ±5–10 min |
| Kedonganan | Fish market and seafood grills, the start of Jimbaran Bay | ±10 min |
| Kuta | Busy, Kuta Beach, shopping and nightlife | ±10–15 min |
| Legian | A little calmer than Kuta, beach and bars | ±20 min |
Times are rough estimates for normal traffic; late afternoon and weekends are slower. For more on the area, see scooter rental in Kuta and the Bali Airport scooter rental page.
One night: probably skip the scooter
With a single night, you'll land, sleep and leave. A taxi or the airport transfer is quicker than arranging a handover, and our 2-day minimum means you'd pay for a day you won't use. If you only want dinner, Kuta Beach and Kedonganan are a short taxi ride from Tuban hotels.
Two nights or a long stopover: a scooter makes sense
With a full day in between, a scooter turns a waiting day into a short holiday. Easy half-day ideas from Tuban or Kuta:
- Sunset and seafood at Kedonganan or Jimbaran — 10–20 minutes south.
- Morning swim at Kuta or Legian beach, then coffee in Legian.
- Uluwatu temple and the Bukit cliffs — about 45–60 minutes via the Bypass; see Bali airport to Uluwatu by scooter.

| Yamaha NMAX 155 (Gen 2) | 155cc | IDR 150,000 | IDR 300,000 | IDR 902,000 |
These are catalogue prices; delivery and pick-up are free at the airport and in Kuta (including Tuban), Legian & Seminyak. The cheapest scooter is IDR 70,000/day; see every model on our Bali scooter rental page. Travelling as a group with bags? A self-drive car starts at IDR 310,000/day (Honda Brio).
Handover at the airport or at the hotel?
- At the airport: fine with a backpack or cabin bag. Send your flight number and landing time; the admin confirms the meeting point on WhatsApp — follow the airport's signs and staff on the day.
- At your hotel: best with a big suitcase or a late landing. Take a taxi to the hotel and the scooter arrives at an agreed time, often the next morning.
Have a data plan or eSIM working before you leave the terminal — you'll need maps for the one-way streets around Kuta.
Paperwork for a short stay
The same rules apply for two days as for two months: your home licence plus an International Driving Permit with the motorcycle category, and your passport to show at handover. Read international driving permit for Bali before you fly.
