The last day of a holiday is usually hectic: packing, checking out, catching a flight. That's exactly when the rental scooter often becomes a problem — running late, low fuel, or arguments over scratches. Yet returning a bike can take just 10 minutes if you prepare from day one. This article covers the usual rules for returning a rental scooter in Bali, common late fees, and how to make sure you get your full deposit back.

When is the return deadline?

At most rentals, one rental day means 24 hours from when the bike is handed over. A bike received at 2 pm on Monday for a three-day rental is due back at 2 pm on Thursday. Some rentals use calendar days instead (return before a set time on the last day). Make sure you know which system applies and note the handover time in your WhatsApp chat.

Late fees: the usual pattern

SituationWhat usually happensAdvice
Less than 1 hour late, with noticeOften toleratedLet them know before the return time, not after
A few hours lateCharged per hour or as half a dayAsk about the hourly rate when booking
Half a day or more lateCharged a full dayCheaper to extend officially from the start
Unreachable and the bike isn't returnedDeposit held, may be reported to the policeAlways keep WhatsApp on and keep them informed

Want extra days? Ask for an extension no later than the day before it's due. WhatsApp is usually enough, and the daily rate still applies. For rentals of 7 days or more, ask for a weekly rate, which is usually cheaper per day.

Fuel rules

The most common rule is return with the same fuel level. So photograph the dashboard when you receive the bike. If it was handed over almost empty (which is fairly common), you don't have to return it full. Fill up at the nearest petrol station before the return point; don't rely on the bottled roadside fuel near the airport, which costs more. Petrol station and fuel type info is in the fuel, petrol stations & parking guide.

Condition check at return

Rental staff usually check the bodywork, mirrors, lights, tyres, odometer and gear. Be proactive: check together while opening the photos or video you recorded at handover.

  1. Park somewhere well lit and switch off the engine.
  2. Open your handover video on your phone. Compare the left, right, front, back, seat and wheels.
  3. Hand over the key, STNK and all gear: helmets (usually two), raincoat, rack or phone holder if any.
  4. Photograph the final condition and the dashboard with the rental staff in frame, showing the time on your phone.
  5. Ask for written confirmation on WhatsApp that the bike was received in good condition and how much deposit is being returned.

The checklist for the start of the rental is in checking your rental scooter at handover. Do it carefully, because the quality of your evidence on day one determines how smoothly the last day goes.

Getting your deposit back

Deposit typeHow it's returnedWhat to keep
CashStraight away when the bike is returnedThe deposit receipt
Bank transfer/e-walletTransferred back; may take some timeProof of transfer and the account number the rental recorded
Documents held (not recommended)Handed back when the bike is returnedPhotos of the documents and proof of handover

If anything is deducted, ask for the details: which part is damaged, photos of the damage, and the price of the spare parts. Compare with your original video. Who pays for what is explained in deposits, insurance & damage on Bali scooter rentals.

Returning the bike at the airport

Many renters want to ride straight to I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport on their rental scooter and hand it over there. It's convenient, but needs arranging:

  • Agree on a specific meeting point the day before, such as the airport's motorbike parking area, and a realistic time.
  • Count back the time: airlines generally advise arriving about 2 hours before domestic flights and 3 hours before international ones. Add time for the bike check and allow for traffic on Jalan By Pass Ngurah Rai.
  • Big luggage: suitcases aren't safe on a scooter. Send your luggage ahead by taxi, or have the rental collect the bike from your hotel and take a taxi to the airport.
  • Parking fees are paid by the rider taking the bike into the airport area; keep small change handy.

Airport delivery and pick-up options are covered in Bali airport scooter rental. If you're spending your last night in Kuta or Jimbaran, returning the bike at the hotel and taking a taxi is often less stressful.

Returning the bike somewhere else

Want to pick up a bike in one area and return it in another? That's a one-way rental and usually comes with a pick-up fee. We cover the terms in one-way scooter rental in Bali.

Checklist for the day before you return

  • Confirm the return time and place via WhatsApp.
  • Refuel to the starting level.
  • Clear rubbish from the under-seat storage and footboard; thick mud is best hosed off at a bike wash.
  • Gather the helmets, raincoat, spare key and STNK in one bag.
  • Have your handover video ready on your phone so it's easy to open.
  • Make sure the account number for your deposit refund is correct.

Bikes returned very dirty (mud, beach sand) sometimes incur a cleaning fee. Bike washes in Bali are cheap and quick, so it's cheaper to wash it yourself after exploring dirt roads.
