Taking a Bali Rental Scooter to Other Islands: Allowed?
By the SiapPergi Editorial Team · Published 11 October 2026 · 5 min read

Many travellers rent a scooter in Bali and then want to use it in Nusa Penida, Lombok, or even ride it back to Java. Technically it's possible, because ferries carry motorbikes. But does the rental allow it, who pays if something happens outside Bali, and is it really cheaper? This article answers each question in turn, with the boat options and the alternatives that usually make more sense.
Can a rental scooter be taken out of Bali?
It depends on the rental, and the most common answer is no, unless you have permission. From the owner's side, the reasoning makes sense: if the bike breaks down or is lost on another island, they can't send a replacement or collect it, and claiming for losses becomes difficult. Boats and harbours also add the risk of scratches and damage.
If you still want to take the bike across, ask for permission before paying and make sure it's in writing (a WhatsApp chat is enough). Ask three things:
- Is there an extra fee or a larger deposit for taking it off Bali?
- Who pays if the bike breaks down, is damaged or lost on the destination island, including the cost of shipping it back?
- Does the original STNK (registration) go with the bike? At the harbour and on the road, you must be able to show the STNK and your licence.
Taking a bike across without permission is the fastest way to lose your deposit. If the rental says no, don't push it; just rent on the destination island.
Which boats can carry a scooter?
This is the most common misunderstanding. There are two types of boat from Bali, and only one carries vehicles.
| Destination | Boat | Can carry a scooter? | Approximate time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nusa Penida / Nusa Lembongan | Fast boat from Sanur | No | About 30–45 minutes |
| Nusa Penida | Ro-ro ferry from Padangbai | Yes, limited schedule | About 1.5–2 hours; check that day's schedule |
| Lombok | Padangbai–Lembar ro-ro ferry | Yes | About 4–5 hours, runs 24 hours |
| Java (Banyuwangi) | Gilimanuk–Ketapang ro-ro ferry | Yes | About 1 hour sailing, runs 24 hours |
| Gili Trawangan / Air / Meno | Fast boat from Padangbai or Serangan | No (and the Gilis are motor-vehicle-free) | About 1.5–2.5 hours |
ASDP ferry tickets for the Padangbai–Lembar and Gilimanuk–Ketapang routes are bought online via the Ferizy app or website before you arrive at the harbour, choosing the vehicle class for motorcycles. Fares are set by the government and can change, so check the figure when booking. Passenger schedules are on the Padangbai–Lembar and Gilimanuk–Ketapang pages.
Nusa Penida: bring your bike or rent there?
Fast boats from Sanur are much quicker and run frequently, but they're for passengers only. The ro-ro from Padangbai carries bikes, but departs less often, takes longer, and you first have to ride about 1 hour from Sanur to Padangbai. On Nusa Penida itself, scooter rentals are available around the harbour and accommodation.
| Consideration | Bring your Bali bike (ro-ro) | Rent on Nusa Penida (fast boat) |
|---|---|---|
| Rental permission | Required, often refused | Not needed |
| Total travel time from Sanur | Longer (to Padangbai + waiting + sailing) | Shorter |
| Schedule | Limited | Many departures morning to afternoon |
| Risk on Nusa Penida's rough roads | You pay the Bali rental for any damage | Local rentals know the road conditions |
| Help if it breaks down | Difficult, the rental is far away | A local rental can come out |
In short, for Nusa Penida it's better to return or store the bike in Bali, cross on the Sanur–Nusa Penida fast boat, then rent a scooter on the island. Road conditions, routes and whether to hire a driver are covered in scooter rental on Nusa Penida.
Lombok: when does bringing a bike make sense?
Taking a bike to Lombok only makes sense if you're staying a long time (weeks), your rental allows it in writing, and you're ready for a 4–5 hour ferry trip plus harbour queues. For a holiday of a few days, renting in Lombok (Senggigi, Kuta Mandalika, Mataram) is usually cheaper, because you don't pay for rental days wasted on the boat, the vehicle ticket, and fuel to Padangbai and back.
To Java via Gilimanuk
A rental bike with DK (Bali) plates may legally be ridden anywhere in Indonesia as long as the STNK is valid. But almost no tourist rental lets its bikes go to Java on a one-way trip, because they'd have to fetch the bike back. If you're moving on to Java, it's more practical to take a bus or shuttle; see bus and shuttle routes.
Documents and preparation if allowed
- The valid original STNK and a SIM C (foreign tourists: home-country licence + an IDP covering motorcycles, or an Indonesian SIM C).
- Written permission from the rental, including the dates the bike leaves and returns to Bali.
- Photos of the bike's condition before boarding: ships and docks often scratch bikes because they're parked tightly together.
- Enough fuel to get out of the destination harbour; petrol stations aren't always close to the dock.
- Arrive early, about 60 minutes before the ferry departs, especially in holiday seasons and before public holidays.
Alternatives that usually work better
- Return the bike before crossing, then rent again when you're back in Bali. Many rentals can deliver to Sanur harbour or the airport. See scooter rental with hotel & villa delivery.
- Leave the bike at your Bali accommodation if you're only crossing for 1–2 days and the rental agrees; the rental keeps running, but it's far cheaper than taking it across.
- Rent on the destination island for your days there, and choose a model that suits the local roads.
When you're back in Bali and need a bike again, check estimated scooter rental in Bali prices by area, for example Sanur, close to the fast-boat harbour.

Frequently asked questions
Can the fast boat to Nusa Penida carry a scooter?
No. Fast boats only take passengers and their luggage. Scooters can only cross on the ro-ro ferry from Padangbai, which has a limited schedule.
Can I take a Bali rental scooter to Lombok?
Only if the rental gives written permission. Many refuse because of the risk and the difficulty of handling damage outside Bali. Renting in Lombok is usually more practical.
How long is the ferry from Padangbai to Lembar?
About 4–5 hours' sailing, not counting harbour queues. The ferry runs 24 hours and tickets are bought online via Ferizy.
Can I take a scooter to Gili Trawangan?
No. The Gili Islands don't allow motor vehicles; people get around by bicycle, cidomo (horse cart) or on foot.
What happens if I take a rental scooter across without permission?
You breach the rental agreement. The rental can keep your deposit, and all damage, loss and the cost of returning the bike become your responsibility.
