Tuban is where Bali Airport actually is — the area that runs from the runway north to Kuta along the beach. Many travellers end up here without knowing the name: the big family hotels and malls on Jl. Kartika Plaza are in Tuban. It's calmer than central Kuta, and a scooter makes it a great base: Kuta Beach is a few minutes north, Jimbaran's seafood a few minutes south, and the Bypass opens the whole south of Bali.

What Tuban is like

  • Beachfront hotels and resorts, many aimed at families, along Jl. Kartika Plaza.
  • Malls and a water park within a short ride, handy on hot or rainy afternoons.
  • Quieter evenings than Kuta and Legian, with Kuta's nightlife 10 minutes away.
  • The airport on your doorstep — useful for early flights and late arrivals.

Riding in Tuban

Tuban's main streets are busy around the airport junctions — the big intersection near the Gatotkaca statue and, further north-east, the Simpang Dewa Ruci roundabout where the Bypass, Sunset Road and the road into Kuta meet. Inside Tuban and Kuta, many streets are one-way, so your route back is often different from your route out. Follow the signs even when your map app disagrees.

Keep left, signal early, and expect scooters to filter on both sides at the junctions. If you're new to it, read riding on the left in Bali first.

Tuban by day and by night

Mornings are the easiest time to ride: traffic is lighter, the beach is calm and it's cooler. Around midday the heat makes malls and the hotel pool more attractive than the saddle. From late afternoon, traffic builds on the roads towards Kuta and Jimbaran as everyone heads for sunset — leave early or stay local. At night Tuban is quiet; ride slowly in the lanes, and if you've been drinking, leave the scooter at the hotel and take a taxi.

Parking at Tuban hotels and malls

Most hotels have space for guests' scooters — ask reception where. Malls usually have a separate motorbike park with a ticket; keep the ticket and the scooter's registration paper (STNK) with you. Pay what the ticket or official sign says.
