Digital nomads, students, long-stay retreat guests and expats often keep the same rental scooter for months. That's the cheapest way to get around Bali — but a scooter doing a month of daily commutes, surf runs and weekend trips needs looking after, just like your own bike would. Here's what to watch, how often, and how to handle servicing with the rental so nobody is surprised.

How much a long-term rental gets ridden

Short trips add up fast. A daily Canggu–Uluwatu surf run, a weekly trip to Ubud and nightly food runs can mean hundreds of kilometres a week. Check the odometer at handover and take a photo — it helps you and the rental know when the next service is due.

Oil changes and routine service

Automatic scooters need engine oil changes regularly, typically every few thousand kilometres depending on the model and the oil, plus periodic checks of brakes, the drive belt, the air filter and lights. Many scooters carry a sticker with the next service due; otherwise, ask the rental when the bike was last serviced. If you'll pass the mark during your rental, agree on a plan early.

Indonesian workshops are called bengkel; oil is oli. A roadside bengkel can change oil in minutes — but ask the rental first, because they may have a preferred workshop, a specific oil or a plan to swap the scooter instead.

Who arranges and pays?

This differs between rentals and between kinds of work, so agree before anything is done. Send a WhatsApp message with what you've noticed (a photo of the odometer or the problem helps) and let the rental tell you how they want to handle it — whether they collect the scooter, send a replacement or ask you to visit a workshop and keep the receipt. Don't authorise repairs on your own and expect to be reimbursed.

Signs something needs attention

What you noticePossible causeWhat to do
Tyre tread looks smooth or the centre is flatWorn tyrePhoto + message; worn tyres are dangerous in rain
Squealing, grinding or levers coming close to the gripWorn brake pads or shoesStop riding and message
Judder or slipping when pulling awayDrive belt or clutch wearMessage; don't ride to the mountains
Engine hard to start, warning light onBattery, oil, sensorMessage with a photo of the dashboard
Headlight, brake light or indicator outBulb or fuseMessage; avoid night riding until fixed

Daily habits catch most of these early; use the 5-minute pre-ride check.

Paperwork on long rentals

The scooter's registration (STNK) must stay valid, and its tax is renewed yearly. That's the owner's job, but on a long rental it's worth checking the dates on the STNK at handover; see checking a rental scooter's STNK & plates. Keep the STNK with the scooter and a photo of it on your phone.

Keeping running costs down

  • Keep the tyres at the right pressure; soft tyres wear faster and use more fuel.
  • Ride smoothly — a steady throttle is easier on the belt and brakes. More in saving fuel on an automatic scooter.
  • Wash off salt and sand after beach weeks; it helps brakes and chains on manual bikes.
  • Park in the shade where you can; Bali's sun is hard on seats and plastics.
