Most dogs in Bali ignore scooters, but some village dogs bark and chase — and Bali is a rabies area. Knowing how to react, and what to do if you're bitten, keeps a scare from becoming a serious problem.
Riding past dogs
- Slow down early; dogs often lose interest when you don't race past.
- Keep both hands on the bars and don't kick out — that's how riders crash.
- At night, stick to main roads; dogs are more territorial in dark lanes.
- Never feed or pet street dogs, however friendly they look.
If you're bitten or scratched
- Wash the wound thoroughly with soap and running water for about 15 minutes.
- Go to a clinic or hospital the same day and say it was an animal bite or scratch.
- Follow the doctor's advice on post-exposure vaccination and complete every dose.
