Bali traffic looks chaotic at first, but it follows its own logic. Once you understand a few unwritten rules, riding becomes much calmer. Here's what first-time riders should know.

The unwritten rules

RuleWhat it means for you
Horn = "I'm here"Tap it before overtaking or at blind corners
Flow, don't stopMerge gradually; sudden stops cause rear-end crashes
Bigger goes firstTrucks and buses rarely yield — give them room
Filter carefullyScooters move to the front at lights; watch for doors and turning cars
Left is slowKeep left; let faster traffic pass on the right
Look, then turnIndicators aren't always used — watch what vehicles do, not their lights

Ceremonies & offerings

  • When a procession fills the road, stop or follow slowly and let the marshals guide you.
  • Roads may close for ceremonies — see ceremonies & road closures.
  • Small offerings (canang) on the ground are part of daily life; try not to ride over them where you can avoid it.
  • Dress respectfully near temples, even when just passing through.

Ride at the speed of the traffic around you. Being much faster or much slower than everyone else is what causes problems.

Practise first

Spend your first hour on quiet roads near your hotel. Read riding on the left in Bali, Bali road signs explained and Bali traffic hot spots.

It's common in Bali traffic. Ride predictably, keep left and check your mirrors often.

Who has right of way in Bali?

Officially it follows the rules, but in practice bigger vehicles go first and traffic flows by gradual merging.
