Sanur Beach: hassle-free sunrise

Sanur Beach faces east, so the sun rises out of the sea. The beachfront path makes it easy to move between viewpoints. From Kuta or Denpasar, the pre-dawn ride is on flat, wide roads and relatively safe. Afterwards, have breakfast in Sanur and carry on with your day — or cross to Nusa Penida from the same beach. Kintamani: Mount and Lake Batur

The Kintamani caldera rim looks out over Mount Batur and its lake as the morning light comes up. From Ubud it's about 45–60 minutes with long climbs. Don't leave Kuta or Canggu at 3 am to catch the Kintamani sunrise. Dark, foggy, winding mountain roads while you're sleepy are a dangerous combination. Spend the night in Kintamani or Ubud instead.

Amed: the sea and Mount Agung

On the Amed coast the sun rises from the sea while Mount Agung towers behind the fishing villages. Viewpoints along the coast road and the beaches give you plenty of angles. Because it's so far from south Bali, staying in Amed is the only realistic option. See riding in Amed & Karangasem.

Lempuyang Temple

Lempuyang's split gate with Mount Agung behind it is one of Bali's most famous photos, and the queue can be long. Arrive very early, dress modestly according to temple rules, and follow the managers' instructions. Riding safely before dawn

Make sure your headlight is bright and your brake light works before you leave.
Wear a jacket, gloves and long trousers — especially for Kintamani.
Watch out for dogs, fog and unlit roads outside town.
Fill up the night before; not every petrol station is open 24 hours.
Get enough sleep. Riding drowsy is as dangerous as riding under the influence of alcohol.
