Kintamani is a highland area on the rim of the Mount Batur caldera, with Lake Batur below. The views make many people want to ride there themselves. That is very doable, as long as you have the right scooter and preparation. This article focuses on the rental side: where to rent, which scooters handle the climbs, how much the entry fee is, and what you can visit once you are up there. For a step-by-step route from Ubud, read the Ubud–Kintamani scooter route.

Rent in Ubud or in Kintamani?

OptionProsCons
Rent in Ubud, ride up to KintamaniWide choice of scooters, competitive prices, easy to swap if there is a problemAbout 1 hour uphill, downhill on the way back
Rent in Kuta/Seminyak/CangguOne scooter for the whole holidayAbout 2–2.5 hours each way, tiring as a day trip
Rent in Kintamani (through accommodation)No need to climb from belowLimited units, rarely a choice of model

The most balanced option is renting in Ubud. If you stay in South Bali and only visit Kintamani for a day, consider moving to Ubud for one night, or going to Kintamani directly by car with a driver. See scooter rental in Ubud for options and estimated prices there.

Scooters that handle the climbs

ModelEstimated market price/dayFor Kintamani
Honda BeATabout Rp60–80kFine for one rider on main roads. Less comfortable for two.
Honda Vario 125about Rp75–100kBudget choice for two on main roads
Yamaha NMAXabout Rp120–150kPowerful, wide seat, firmer brakes for long descents
Honda PCXabout Rp130–160kComfortable and stable for long round trips
Kawasaki KLX 150about Rp180–250kExperienced riders only. Ask the rental's permission before taking it on sand or lava tracks.

The descent from Penelokan to Kedisan and Toya Bungkah is the most demanding part. A 150–160 cc scooter such as the Yamaha NMAX or Honda PCX gives you more power and better braking with a passenger. Compare the two in NMAX vs PCX.

On long descents, use the front and rear brakes together, gradually, rather than holding one brake the whole way. If you smell hot brakes or the brakes feel weaker, pull over and rest for 10 minutes.

Kintamani entry fee

Bangli Regency charges a tourist attraction fee in the Kintamani area. The rates under Bangli Regional Regulation No. 5 of 2023, still quoted by the Bangli Tourism Office in 2026, are:

CategoryAdultChild
Foreign touristsRp50,000Rp30,000
Indonesian touristsRp25,000Rp15,000
Bali ID card (KTP) holdersRp10,000Rp5,000

The fee is paid per person at an official post, for example on the Penelokan road. Ask for an official ticket and keep it while you are in the area. Rates can change, so treat the figures above as a guide. For foreign visitors, this fee is separate from the Bali Province foreign tourist levy of Rp150,000.

Along the caldera rim, many cafés and restaurants have scooter parking for customers. If you stop at the roadside for photos, choose a wide shoulder well away from bends. Hawkers are quite persistent in some spots. Decline politely if you are not interested.

Climbing Mount Batur for sunrise

The sunrise trek up Mount Batur (1,717 m) usually starts around 3:30–4:00 am from a trailhead near Toya Bungkah. Riding from Ubud at 2 am means dark, cold and sometimes foggy roads while you are sleepy. Safer options: stay a night in Kintamani or Toya Bungkah, or join a trekking package that includes transfers. After the trek, you can use the scooter to explore the lake during the day.

Weather and gear

  • Warm jacket and gloves. Penelokan sits at around 1,400 m. Mornings and evenings are cold, especially with the wind on a scooter.
  • Raincoat. Rain and fog often arrive from midday or afternoon, especially in the rainy season (roughly November–March).
  • Working lights. In fog, turn on your lights and slow down. Visibility can drop sharply.
  • A full tank from below. There are petrol stations on the main road, but fill up before going down to the lake or onto village roads.
  • Cash. For the entry fee, parking and small warungs around the lake.

Tips for riding on wet roads are in riding a scooter in Bali's rainy season.
