Klungkung is Bali's smallest regency, but its history is big: Semarapura was once the seat of the Klungkung Kingdom, the most respected of Bali's kingdoms. Its mainland part has just three districts and is easy to explore in a day by scooter from Sanur or Ubud. The fourth district, Nusa Penida, is a group of islands across the strait. This guide focuses on mainland Klungkung and how to combine it with a trip to East Bali.

Scooter routes to Semarapura

From Sanur: the Ida Bagus Mantra Bypass

This wide coastal road links Sanur with Klungkung in approx. 1 hour. Traffic flows well but vehicles travel fast; stay in the left lane and watch for trucks. Along the way are black-sand beaches such as Saba and Lebih where you can stop. Pick up a scooter at scooter rental Sanur.

From Ubud: village roads via Gianyar

From Ubud, set your navigation to Gianyar and then Semarapura. The roads are smaller and pass villages and rice fields, approx. 45 minutes for approx. 25 km. A scooter from scooter rental Ubud is fine; a Vario 125 is comfortable for two.

Klungkung and Nusa Penida

Nusa Penida District belongs to Klungkung Regency, but it's reached by sea. Fast boats leave from Sanur and from the harbour at Kusamba. Rentals on the island provide scooters, so you don't need to bring one from the mainland. See scooter rental Nusa Penida and taking a rental scooter between islands. Boat tickets can be booked on the boat tickets page.

Riding tips for Klungkung

  • Central Semarapura has several one-way streets; follow the signs rather than relying on Google Maps alone. See Google Maps navigation for scooters in Bali.
  • Klungkung often holds large ceremonies; village roads may be closed temporarily. Read ceremonies & road closures in Bali.
  • The Ida Bagus Mantra Bypass is hot at midday; bring water and sunscreen.
