A week gives you time to get out of South Bali and see the island as a whole: the Uluwatu cliffs, the lakes and forests of Munduk, the black-sand beaches of Lovina, the Batur caldera, then the rice fields and waterfalls of Ubud. This itinerary is a clockwise loop on one scooter for seven days, with daily distances of 15–110 km and sensible changes of accommodation. If you only have three days, use the 3-day Bali scooter itinerary.

7 days at a glance

DayRouteEstimated distanceOvernight
1Arrive, collect the scooter, get used to Kuta–Seminyak±10–20 kmKuta/Seminyak/Canggu
2The Bukit: Uluwatu, Padang Padang, Melasti±60–70 kmKuta/Seminyak/Canggu
3Taman Ayun → Jatiluwih → Bedugul → Munduk±80–90 kmMunduk
4Lake Tamblingan → Munduk waterfalls → Lovina±35–45 kmLovina
5Lovina → Kintamani (Penelokan) → Ubud±100–110 kmUbud
6Gianyar waterfalls or Tegallalang & Tirta Empul±50–80 kmUbud
7Ubud → Klungkung (optional) → Sanur/Kuta, return the scooter±30–60 km—

All distances are one-way estimates without traffic. In Bali, average speeds on mountain roads are only 30–40 km/h, so 100 km can take 3 hours of actual riding.

Preparation: scooter, luggage and documents

  • One scooter for the whole trip. Book with your full dates and ask for the weekly price; see weekly scooter rental in Bali.
  • Return it in the same area where you collected it (for example Kuta or Sanur). Returning it elsewhere is sometimes possible, for an extra fee that should be agreed in writing from the start.
  • Luggage: automatic scooters aren't built for suitcases. Bring a backpack, leave your suitcase at your day 1–2 hotel (many hotels store luggage if you are coming back), or send it with a courier service.
  • Documents: SIM C (Indonesian motorcycle licence; foreign visitors: home licence + IDP), the scooter's STNK (registration certificate) and your ID.
  • Rain poncho, jacket, sarong for temples, a power bank, and cash for tickets and village parking.

Days 1–2: South Bali

Use day one to receive the scooter at your hotel, test the brakes and lights, then take short rides around Kuta, Seminyak or Canggu. If it's your first time riding in Bali, get used to left-hand traffic and busy roads before covering long distances.

Day two heads to the Bukit Peninsula: Pura Luhur Uluwatu, the beaches below the cliffs, and the Kecak dance at sunset. Pick just two or three beaches, as many beach accesses involve long staircases. Get a good night's sleep, because day three starts early.

Day 3: from the beach to the mountains

Check out at 07:00 with just your backpack. Go via Mengwi to stop at Taman Ayun, climb to the Jatiluwih rice terraces, then on to Bedugul for Pura Ulun Danu Beratan. From Bedugul, the ridge road past Lakes Buyan and Tamblingan takes you to Munduk. Details of the Jatiluwih leg are in the Tanah Lot–Jatiluwih scooter route, and Bedugul–Munduk in the Bedugul & Munduk scooter route.

Munduk sits at around 800–1,000 m and is often misty after 15:00. Aim to arrive before late afternoon and don't push on through thick fog.

Day 4: Munduk to Lovina

An easy day. In the morning, walk to one of Munduk's waterfalls or to the shore of Lake Tamblingan. After lunch, descend to the north coast on the winding road towards Seririt or Banjar, then on to Lovina. On the way you can stop at the Banjar hot springs. Evenings in Lovina are peaceful, with the sun setting over the sea. Stay close to the beach so you can walk to warungs and cafés at night without the scooter.

Day 5: Lovina to Kintamani, then Ubud

The longest day. From Lovina, go through Singaraja and turn south towards Kintamani on the Kubutambahan–Penulisan road, which climbs steadily. At Penelokan, you look out over Mount Batur and its lake from the caldera rim. After lunch, descend to Ubud via Tegallalang. Fill up in Singaraja, as petrol stations are scarcer on the mountain road.

  • Leave by 08:00 at the latest.
  • The Kubutambahan–Penulisan climb is long; riding two-up, a 150 cc scooter is much more comfortable.
  • Kintamani can be around 18–22 °C and windy; wear a jacket.
  • Details of the Kintamani–Ubud road are in the Ubud–Kintamani scooter route.

Day 6: Ubud and around

Pick one theme so you don't wear yourself out. Waterfall theme: Tukad Cepung, Tibumana, Kanto Lampo and Tegenungan, following the Gianyar waterfalls scooter route. Culture theme: Tegallalang in the morning, Tirta Empul in Tampaksiring, then Goa Gajah. In the evening, enjoy Ubud without the scooter.

Day 7: back to the south

If your flight is in the afternoon or evening, stop at Kertha Gosa in Klungkung (Semarapura) or Sanur Beach before returning the scooter. Leave at least 3 hours between returning the scooter and an international flight, or 2 hours for a domestic one. If you want a ride to the airport, take a taxi or transfer after handing the scooter back.

Itinerary variations

  • Love the east coast: swap day 6 for Ubud → Sidemen → Amed, stay in Amed, then return on day 7 via Candidasa. Details are in the East Bali & Lempuyang scooter route guide.
  • Want to visit Nusa Penida: add a day from Sanur. Scooters can't go on the fast boat; rent another on the island. Arrange storage for your scooter or return it before crossing.
  • Rainy season: start the mountain days earlier and keep one spare day with nothing planned.

Conclusion

Seven days on one scooter is enough to see the south, west, north and centre of Bali without rushing. The keys: a light backpack, early starts, the longest day in the middle, and clear return arrangements from the start. Start planning by booking a week of scooter rental in Bali in the area where you land.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is 7 days enough to tour Bali by scooter?

It's enough for South Bali, Tabanan, Munduk, Lovina, Kintamani and Ubud at a relaxed pace. East Bali (Amed, Lempuyang) and Nusa Penida need extra days or must replace one of the days.

What is the total distance of a 7-day Bali loop?

About 450–550 km for the route in this article, with the longest day (Lovina–Kintamani–Ubud) at around 100–110 km.

How do I handle a suitcase when touring Bali by scooter?

Bring a 30–40 litre backpack and leave your suitcase at a hotel you'll stay at again, or use a luggage courier service. A large suitcase isn't safe to carry on an automatic scooter.

Which scooter is best for a week touring Bali?

A Honda Vario 125 riding solo, a Yamaha NMAX or Honda PCX two-up, because of the long climbs to Bedugul and Kintamani.

Can I return a rental scooter in a different area?

It depends on the rental. Some will collect it from another area for an extra fee. Ask when you book and get the fee in writing.
