Gianyar Waterfalls by Scooter: 4 Waterfalls Near Ubud
By the SiapPergi Editorial Team · Published 11 October 2026 · 6 min read

East of Ubud, rivers flowing down from the slopes of Batur form a string of waterfalls that are easy to reach by scooter: big, busy Tegenungan; Kanto Lampo cascading over tiers of rock; peaceful Tibumana in the forest; and Tukad Cepung hidden inside a cave-like gorge. You can visit all four in a day if you get the order right. This guide gives you the order, distances, ticket estimates, and the things people often forget: footwear, a change of clothes, and how to store your belongings on the scooter.
Where the four waterfalls are
Not all of them are officially in Gianyar Regency. Tegenungan (Kemenuh village, Sukawati) and Kanto Lampo (Beng village) are in Gianyar, while Tibumana (Apuan village, Susut) and Tukad Cepung (Tembuku village) are in Bangli Regency, right on the border. For riders, all four lie along one route and can be linked in a single loop from Ubud.
| Waterfall | Location | Walking access | Highlights |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tukad Cepung | Tembuku, Bangli | Steps down ±10–15 min, then wading along a shallow river | Water falls inside a cave-like gorge; morning light beams |
| Tibumana | Apuan, Bangli | Footpath and steps ±10 min | A single curtain of water into a green pool, jungle setting |
| Kanto Lampo | Beng, Gianyar | Steps ±5–10 min | Water cascades over tiers of rock; often closed after heavy rain |
| Tegenungan | Kemenuh, Gianyar | Hundreds of steps down and back up | The largest and busiest, with plenty of facilities |

Notes on each waterfall
Tukad Cepung
After parking, you walk down steps and then along a shallow riverbed and through a narrow rock passage. The waterfall drops into a cave-like chamber open to the sky. The famous light beams in the photos only appear when the sky is clear and the sun is high enough, usually mornings in the dry season. In the rainy season the water level rises and the managers may close access for safety.
Tibumana
The entrance path is shady and fairly easy. The waterfall is a single straight curtain into a pool. Swimming is usually allowed when the water is calm; follow the signs and the staff's instructions. This is the best spot for a longer rest.
Kanto Lampo
The water flows over stepped layers of rock, so many people climb onto the rocks for photos. The rocks are slippery. Wear hiking sandals or water shoes, and don't climb when the current is strong. Access is often closed after heavy rain.
Tegenungan
The biggest waterfall on this route, with cafés and swings on the cliff above. The staircase is long, so save your energy. Swimming may be banned when the water is high, so follow the staff at the bottom.
Wear your swimwear underneath with a T-shirt or shirt on top. Don't ride in just your swimwear; besides being impolite in the villages, bare skin gets badly hurt if you fall off a scooter.

Gear and storing things on the scooter
- A small dry bag for your phone, wallet and scooter key near the water.
- Hiking sandals or water shoes with grippy soles; flip-flops come off easily on slippery rocks.
- A towel and change of clothes under the seat. An automatic scooter's under-seat storage fits a small towel and one set of clothes.
- Don't leave your helmet on the mirror for long; hook it on the helmet hanger or leave it at a guarded car park.
- Drinking water: the stairs at Tegenungan and Tukad Cepung are draining.
Safety in the rainy season
In the rainy season (roughly November–March), waterfall levels can rise fast when it rains upstream, even if the sky is clear where you are. If the water suddenly turns murky or the current picks up, get out straight away. Village roads to the car parks are also slippery with moss and mud. Slow down, avoid sudden braking, and read the guide to riding a scooter in Bali's rainy season.
Which scooter suits this route
This route is flat to slightly hilly with narrow village roads. A Honda Scoopy or BeAT is nimble and easy to park in small spaces. If you are riding two-up and want more power for the climbs out of the valleys, choose a Vario 125. A big scooter like an XMAX is actually a hassle in village car parks.
| Model | Price/day | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Honda BeAT | from Rp60.000 | Fuel-efficient & light, great around town |
| Honda Scoopy | from Rp65.000to Rp70.000 | Retro style, roomy storage |
| Honda Vario 125 | from Rp65.000to Rp75.000 | Comfortable for mid distances |
| Yamaha NMAX 155 | from Rp120.000 | Big & stable, comfy with a passenger |
| Honda PCX 160 | from Rp130.000 | Premium, spacious seat |
| Kawasaki KLX 150 | from Rp180.000 | Trail bike for village roads & hills |
| Yamaha XMAX 250 | from Rp300.000 | Maxi-scooter for touring |
