Scooter Rental Helmets in Bali: SNI Standard, Size & Checks

The helmet is often the least-considered item when renting a scooter, yet it's the gear that matters most if you crash. In Bali, helmet checks by police are also fairly common in tourist areas. This guide explains the helmet rules, how to choose and check a rental helmet in two minutes, and when it makes sense to buy your own.
Helmet rules in Indonesia
Law No. 22 of 2009, Article 106(8), requires motorcycle riders and passengers to wear helmets that meet the Indonesian National Standard (SNI). The standard is SNI 1811:2007, made mandatory by the Ministry of Industry for helmets used on two-wheeled motor vehicles — including imported helmets sold in Indonesia.
| Offence | Legal basis | Maximum penalty |
|---|---|---|
| Rider not wearing an SNI helmet | Article 291(1) | 1 month's detention or a Rp250,000 fine |
| Allowing a passenger to ride without a helmet | Article 291(2) | 1 month's detention or a Rp250,000 fine |
These penalties apply to the rider, so you're also responsible for your passenger's helmet. Other offences commonly found at police checks are summarised in Bali traffic rules and police checks.
Helmet types rentals usually lend
| Type | Features | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Half face | Covers the top of the head, ears exposed | Short trips in town; the least protection |
| Open face (3/4) | Covers the head and ears, face open, often with a visor | The usual choice for tourists; a balance of comfort and safety |
| Full face | Covers the whole head including the chin | Long trips, higher speeds, bigger bikes such as the XMAX |
Avoid thin "shell" helmets with no protective foam, or construction hard hats. Besides lacking the SNI label, they absorb almost no impact.
How to find the right size
- Measure your head circumference with a tape measure, about 2 cm above your eyebrows and around the widest part of the back of your head. As a general guide: S ±55–56 cm, M ±57–58 cm, L ±59–60 cm, XL ±61–62 cm (brands may differ slightly).
- Try it on. A well-fitting helmet feels evenly snug all round, with no painful pressure points.
- Do the shake test. Shake your head left-right and up-down: the helmet shouldn't shift much or slide down over your eyes.
- Tighten the chin strap until only one or two fingers fit under your chin.
Children's heads are much smaller than adults', and rentals don't always have child helmets. If you're bringing kids, ask when booking or bring your own — read riding a scooter with kids in Bali.
Check a rental helmet in two minutes
Do these checks at handover, alongside inspecting the bike using the handover checklist:
- An embossed SNI logo on the shell, usually at the back.
- Intact shell: no cracks, dents or signs of hard impact. A helmet that has had a hard fall should be replaced.
- Inner foam (EPS) is present and not crumbling; the fabric lining isn't torn.
- Strap and buckle work and don't loosen by themselves when pulled.
- Visor (if fitted) is clean and opens and closes; a scratched, cloudy visor is dangerous in rain or at night.
- Two helmets if you're riding with a passenger, each in the right size.
If a helmet isn't fit for use, ask for a replacement on the spot. Request it in your WhatsApp message when booking via the Bali scooter rental page so the rental prepares two helmets in the sizes you need.
Rental helmet hygiene
Rental helmets are shared by many people in a hot, humid climate. A few simple steps make them more pleasant:
- Wear a thin skull cap or balaclava as a layer between your head and the helmet foam.
- Bring wet wipes or disinfectant spray to clean the inside and the chin strap.
- Air the helmet in a breezy, shaded spot after use; don't leave it in strong sun for too long.
Buy your own helmet or use the rental's?
| Situation | Advice |
|---|---|
| 2–5 day holiday, town routes | A rental helmet is fine, as long as it passes the checks above |
| Weekly or monthly rental | Consider buying your own SNI helmet; see weekly scooter rental |
| Long-distance touring or a big bike | A well-fitting full-face helmet is far more comfortable and safer |
| Bringing children | Get a child-size SNI helmet |
SNI helmets can be bought at helmet shops and motorcycle gear stores in Denpasar and the tourist areas. Local-brand SNI open-face helmets generally start at around Rp200,000, with full-face and premium brands costing more (market price estimate).
Helmets in rain and at night
Tropical rain in Bali often falls hard and suddenly. A clear visor helps protect your eyes from water and insects; avoid tinted visors at night because they reduce visibility. If your helmet has no visor, wear clear glasses. Keep the helmet indoors or covered when the bike is parked so the foam doesn't stay wet all day.
When should a helmet be replaced?
A helmet is designed to absorb one hard impact. The EPS foam inside crushes to absorb energy and doesn't return to its original shape, even if the outer shell looks intact. So:
- Replace any helmet that has been in an accident or dropped hard onto asphalt from head height.
- Replace helmets whose foam is flattened, cracked or sticky, or whose strap is torn.
- If a rental helmet is dropped while you're using it, tell the rental so it can be checked and not lent to the next renter.
Helmets are part of riding safely
A good helmet works best combined with safe habits: sensible speeds, a jacket, long trousers and closed shoes. The full guide is in tips for riding a scooter safely in Bali. For long trips in a full-face helmet, a stable bike such as the Yamaha NMAX or Yamaha XMAX is more comfortable than a 110 cc automatic.

Frequently asked questions
Does scooter rental in Bali include helmets?
Usually yes — rentals lend helmets, typically two, for rider and passenger. Still check their condition and size at handover.
What is the fine for not wearing a helmet in Bali?
Under Article 291 of Law 22/2009, the penalty is up to 1 month's detention or a fine of up to Rp250,000, for riders without a helmet and for riders who let a passenger ride without one.
How do I recognise an SNI helmet?
Look for an embossed SNI logo on the helmet shell. The standard for motorcycle helmets is SNI 1811:2007.
Can I use a helmet from my home country?
Helmets used in Indonesia must meet the SNI standard. An imported helmet without the SNI mark risks being considered non-compliant at a police check.
Do rentals have children's helmets?
Not all of them. Ask when booking or bring your own child-size SNI helmet.
