Most people know Badung as Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu and Nusa Dua. Yet more than half of the regency is rice fields, customary villages and cool mountains in Mengwi, Abiansemal and Petang. These three districts are close to the tourist hubs, their roads are relatively quiet, and they suit long stays or relaxed day trips. This guide covers how to rent a scooter and the best routes.

Mengwi: Taman Ayun and the beaches west of Canggu

Mengwi is Badung's second-largest district and home to the regency's government centre (Mangupura). From Canggu or Seminyak, a scooter is the fastest way through its village roads.

  • Taman Ayun Temple — the royal temple of Mengwi with tiered meru shrines and a surrounding moat; part of the UNESCO-listed Subak cultural landscape. About 30 minutes from Canggu.
  • Seseh and Cemagi beaches — black-sand beaches far quieter than Canggu, great for sunset. The road there passes rice fields and villages.
  • Munggu and Pererenan — a fast-growing villa area on the Canggu border; many long-term residents use monthly rentals.

Pick up a scooter at scooter rental Canggu and head west. For long stays, compare costs in monthly scooter rental in Bali.

Abiansemal: Sangeh and the Ayung valley

Abiansemal borders Ubud directly across the Ayung River. Many rice-field villas and valley resorts are actually in this district, so a scooter from scooter rental Ubud can usually be delivered.

  • Sangeh Nutmeg Forest — a forest of nutmeg trees home to hundreds of long-tailed macaques, with a temple at its centre. Stow sunglasses, hats and small items under the seat before going in.
  • Bongkasa — the edge of the Ayung River valley, with rafting points and swings above the rice fields.
  • Blahkiuh–Sangeh village road — a shortcut linking north Denpasar with Ubud without going through town centres.

Petang: Pelaga and Tukad Bangkung Bridge

Petang is the northern tip of Badung, a mountain district bordering Kintamani (Bangli) and Baturiti (Tabanan). Cool air, vegetable and coffee plantations, and winding roads make it a beautiful but demanding scooter route.

  • Tukad Bangkung Bridge — a long bridge in Pelaga with pillars approx. 70 m high above the valley. There's a parking area to stop and take photos.
  • Nungnung Waterfall — a tall waterfall with hundreds of steps; save some energy for the climb back up.
  • Pelaga agrotourism — vegetable, fruit and coffee farms; a good place to stop for coffee.
  • Road on to Kintamani — from Pelaga, the road climbs towards the Batur area. Combine it with the Ubud–Kintamani scooter route.

Frequently asked questions

Which districts are in Badung Regency?

Six: Kuta, North Kuta, South Kuta, Mengwi, Abiansemal and Petang. The capital is Mangupura in Mengwi District.

Where should I rent a scooter to visit Taman Ayun?

In Canggu or Seminyak. From Canggu, Taman Ayun Temple is about 30 minutes by scooter.

Can a 110 cc scooter handle the climb to Pelaga and Tukad Bangkung?

Yes, if you're riding alone without much luggage. For two people, a Vario 125, NMAX or PCX is much more comfortable on the climbs.

Is it safe to park a scooter at Sangeh?

Yes, but don't leave anything on the hook or on top of the scooter, as the monkeys may grab it. Keep everything in the under-seat storage.
