Kerobokan has no single famous landmark. That is exactly why many people choose to live here: bigger villas, fairer rents, and Seminyak and Canggu still close by. The catch is that public transport barely exists and taxis often get stuck in traffic on Jl. Raya Kerobokan. A scooter is the answer. This guide covers which scooter suits the area, which roads to avoid, and how to rent for a long stay.

Where is Kerobokan?

Kerobokan is part of North Kuta district in Badung Regency. Seminyak lies to the south, Petitenget and Batu Belig by the beach to the west, Umalas and Berawa to the north, and West Denpasar to the east. Some of the beach clubs and restaurants people call "Seminyak" are actually in Kerobokan Kelod.

Because it is right in the middle, Kerobokan makes a good base if you want to switch between Seminyak and Canggu without changing accommodation. See also our guides to scooter rental in Seminyak and scooter rental in Canggu for places in both areas.

Scooters that suit Kerobokan

ModelEstimated market price/dayBest for
Honda BeATabout Rp60–80kSolo riders, short trips, cheapest
Honda Scoopyabout Rp70–90kDaily use, narrow villa lanes, more storage
Honda Vario 125about Rp75–100kTwo riders, daily trips to Canggu and Denpasar
Yamaha NMAXabout Rp120–150kLonger trips to Ubud, Tanah Lot or Uluwatu

Many roads in Umalas and Batu Belig are narrow and lead into villa lanes, so a small scooter is more nimble. If you often leave town, consider a Yamaha NMAX with its wider seat and bigger tank. To compare the two most popular automatics, read BeAT vs Scoopy.

Main roads and traffic hotspots

  • Jl. Raya Kerobokan, the north–south artery to Seminyak and Kuta, is packed in the morning (work and school runs) and late afternoon.
  • Sunset Road links Kerobokan to Kuta and the Dewa Ruci roundabout. It is wide and usually the faster way to the airport.
  • Jl. Batu Belig and Jl. Petitenget are narrow and busy before sunset because of the beach clubs and restaurants.
  • Jl. Raya Umalas and the village roads around it are shortcuts to Berawa and Canggu, but they are narrow with no pavements.
  • Jl. Gunung Tangkuban Perahu heads east to Denpasar and is often busy at rush hour.

Time your trips. Leaving before 7 am or between 10 am and 3 pm can cut travel time by up to half compared with rush hour, especially on Jl. Raya Kerobokan.

Travel times from Kerobokan

Long stays: daily, weekly or monthly rental?

Many Kerobokan residents stay for weeks or months. Daily rental is the most flexible, but for more than a week a weekly or monthly package is almost always cheaper per day. When renting long term, make sure these points are in writing:

  • The monthly price and the renewal due date.
  • Who pays for routine servicing and oil changes. Usually the rental, but ask first.
  • Whether the scooter can be swapped if it breaks down, and how long a replacement takes.
  • The deposit amount and the conditions for getting it back.
  • When the STNK (registration) tax expires, so it does not lapse mid-rental.

The full guide is in monthly scooter rental in Bali.

Parking and security

  • Villas in Umalas usually have a yard or carport. Keep the scooter inside the gate at night.
  • In Petitenget and Batu Belig, use the official parking of beach clubs or restaurants. Avoid parking on the narrow road shoulder.
  • Lock the handlebars and use a disc lock if the rental provides one.
  • Do not hang bags or phones on the scooter when stopped at traffic lights.

Day one: an efficient order

The first day often disappears in small errands. With a scooter, you can sort them out in one short loop:

  1. Receive the scooter at your villa. Check the brakes, tyres, lights and fuel, then photograph the scooter together with the rental's courier. The full checklist is in checking a rental scooter at handover.
  2. Fuel up and shop. Petrol stations and minimarkets are easy to find on Jl. Raya Kerobokan and Sunset Road. Buy drinking water, a spare raincoat and a SIM card if you do not have one yet.
  3. Learn the shortcuts. Try the Umalas–Berawa route in daylight while the roads are quiet, so you do not get lost riding home at night.
  4. Beach in the afternoon. Batu Belig or Petitenget is only about 10 minutes away. Arrive before 5 pm to get a parking spot.

In the rainy season (roughly November–March), some roads in South Bali flood after heavy rain. Do not force your way through deep water, as it can get into the engine and exhaust. Wait a little or find another way round.
