Most people come to Tulamben for one thing: the USAT Liberty, a Second World War cargo ship wreck you can reach by simply walking in from the pebble beach. Between dives, though, Tulamben is a sleepy strip of dive lodges along the main north-east road. A scooter turns those surface intervals and rest days into something more: breakfast in Amed, sunrise at Lempuyang, a waterfall in the hills. This guide is for divers and snorkellers staying in Tulamben. For riding along Amed's headlands, see riding in Amed & Karangasem.

How to get a scooter in Tulamben

Tulamben is a long way from the big rental hubs, so delivery there is arranged case by case: the admin confirms whether a bike is available, the delivery time and any distance fee on WhatsApp before you book — you still pay nothing until the scooter arrives. Many travellers simply rent in Sanur or Ubud and ride there themselves; the bike can stay with you for the whole trip.

  • Ride up from the south with your own rental: Sanur → Klungkung → Candidasa → Amlapura → Tulamben, or the inland road via Sidemen. Route details: Sanur to Amed by scooter and Ubud to Amed.
  • Ask for delivery to your dive lodge. Send the lodge name and Maps pin; the admin confirms what's possible before you book.
  • Coming from Amed? The Amed scooter rental page covers the neighbouring coast — Tulamben is just up the road.

Which scooter for Tulamben?

Honda BeAT (Gen 4–5)IDR 80,000IDR 425,000IDR 1,210,000
Honda Scoopy (Gen 4)IDR 90,000IDR 515,000IDR 1,410,000
Honda Vario 125IDR 100,000IDR 515,000IDR 1,510,000
Yamaha NMAX 155 (Gen 2)IDR 150,000IDR 902,000IDR 2,260,000
Honda PCX 160 (Gen 2)IDR 150,000IDR 902,000IDR 2,260,000

Around Tulamben the coast road is mostly flat, so a Honda BeAT or Scoopy is plenty for short hops to Amed or a warung. If you're riding 2.5–3.5 hours from Sanur with a dive bag, a Yamaha NMAX or PCX is far more comfortable and has more under-seat space. The Amed headlands beyond Jemeluk are steep — a Vario 125 or bigger handles them better.

Local tips for divers on a scooter

  • Don't ride with tanks or a full BCD. Dive centres usually carry tanks to the entry point; keep your scooter for the rest of the day.
  • No riding straight after deep dives when you're tired. Have a rest and a drink first; afternoon heat on this coast is intense.
  • Fuel up in Culik or Amlapura. Petrol stations are few along this stretch; warungs sell bottled petrol for emergencies.
  • Watch for trucks. The Amlapura–Singaraja road carries trucks and buses; keep left and don't overtake on bends.
  • Wet gear and seats. Put a towel or plastic bag on the seat after a dive — salt water and sand damage seat covers.

Snorkellers: early morning is calm and clear at the wreck. Ride over to Jemeluk later in the day — see Bali's best snorkelling spots by scooter.

How booking works

  1. Pick a scooter in the catalogue (or tell us your height, route and how many riders and we'll suggest one).

  3. The admin confirms the bike, the total price and the delivery time — no payment yet.
  4. The scooter arrives with 2 helmets. Check it together, show your passport and licence, then pay in full (bank transfer or e-wallet).

Frequently asked questions

Can I rent a scooter in Tulamben?

Choice in the village is small. You can ride a rental up from Sanur or Ubud, or ask for delivery to your dive lodge — the admin confirms availability and any distance fee on WhatsApp before you book.

How far is Tulamben from Amed?

About 25–35 minutes to Jemeluk Bay by scooter along the coast road.

Do I need a scooter if I'm only diving the Liberty wreck?

Not for the wreck itself — it's walkable. A scooter is useful for rest days and surface intervals: Amed, Tirta Gangga, Lempuyang and Les waterfall.

What's the best scooter to ride from Sanur to Tulamben?

An NMAX or PCX: more comfortable for 2.5–3.5 hours, better with a passenger or a dive bag.

Do I pay before the scooter arrives?

No. You pay in full on delivery, with no deposit and no passport left behind.
