Munduk is where Bali goes quiet and cool: cloud forest, two crater lakes, waterfalls a short walk from the road and guesthouses looking over clove trees to the sea. Taxis are scarce up here and the sights are spread along ridge roads, so a scooter is what makes a stay in Munduk work. This guide is for people sleeping in Munduk (or nearby Wanagiri and Gesing): how to get a bike up the mountain, what to ride and how long everything takes. If you only want a day trip from the south, see the Bedugul & Munduk scooter route instead.

How to get a scooter in Munduk

Munduk is a long way from the big rental hubs, so delivery there is arranged case by case: the admin confirms whether a bike is available, the delivery time and any distance fee on WhatsApp before you book — you still pay nothing until the scooter arrives. Many travellers simply rent in Ubud, Canggu or Lovina and ride there themselves; the bike can stay with you for the whole trip.

  1. Rent in the south, ride up. The most common choice: start from Canggu, Seminyak or Ubud in the morning and ride the 2–3 hours via Bedugul. See scooter rental in Ubud or Canggu.
  2. Rent in Lovina and ride up from the coast. Coming from the north? The climb from Lovina via Banjar is shorter (about 45–60 minutes). See scooter rental in Lovina.
  3. Ask for delivery to your guesthouse. Send the name and Maps pin; the admin tells you whether it's possible and what it costs before anything is booked.

Doing a loop (South → Munduk → Lovina → Ubud)? Keep the same scooter for the whole trip and tell the admin your plan when booking, so pick-up is arranged at your last stop.

Which scooter for Munduk?

ScooterDailyWeeklyMonthly
Honda Vario 125IDR 100,000IDR 515,000IDR 1,510,000
Honda Vario 160IDR 130,000AskIDR 1,910,000
Yamaha NMAX 155 (Gen 2)IDR 150,000IDR 902,000IDR 2,260,000
Honda PCX 160 (Gen 2)IDR 150,000IDR 902,000IDR 2,260,000
Honda ADV 160 ABSIDR 180,000AskIDR 3,010,000

A 110 cc BeAT can get up, but it struggles with two people and luggage on the long climbs past Bedugul. Riding solo with a backpack, a Vario 125 is enough. Two-up, or carrying bags from the south, choose a Yamaha NMAX or Honda PCX: more power uphill and better brakes downhill. The ADV 160 has taller suspension for broken village lanes.

Riding in the highlands: fog, cold and steep bends

  • Ride before about 15:00. Fog often rolls in during the afternoon and visibility can drop to a few metres. Lights on, slow down, no overtaking.
  • It gets cold. Evenings and early mornings are noticeably cooler than the coast. Pack a jacket and long trousers, and a raincoat all year.
  • Downhill = engine and both brakes. Don't hold the rear brake all the way down to Lovina — it overheats. Read our hills and descents tips.
  • Wet, mossy road edges. Shaded bends stay damp all day; keep to the clean line.
  • No night rides on the ridge. Unlit, winding and misty — plan to be at your guesthouse by dark.

Fuel, cash and parking

  • Petrol stations are on the main roads (around Bedugul and down on the north coast), not in Munduk itself. Fill up before you climb; village shops sell bottled petrol in an emergency.
  • Some warungs and waterfall entrances are cash-only and ATMs are limited — bring enough rupiah from town.
  • Parking at viewpoints and waterfalls is usually a small fee paid to a local attendant; keep coins and small notes handy.

How long to rent for a Munduk stay

Most people spend 2–3 nights in Munduk as part of a loop. A 2-day minimum rental covers a short highland stay; for a full loop (south → Munduk → Lovina → Ubud), a weekly rate is usually cheaper per day. Plan the loop with our 7-day Bali scooter itinerary or the Ubud to Lovina route.

How booking works

  1. Pick a scooter in the catalogue (or tell us your height, route and how many riders and we'll suggest one).
  2. Send your dates (minimum 2 days), the hotel or villa name with a Google Maps pin, and your WhatsApp number.
  3. The admin confirms the bike, the total price and the delivery time — no payment yet.
  4. The scooter arrives with 2 helmets. Check it together, show your passport and licence, then pay in full (bank transfer or e-wallet).

Book on WhatsApp or via the Bali scooter rental catalogue: the bike is delivered to your hotel or villa and you pay when it arrives — no deposit.

Frequently asked questions

Can I rent a scooter in Munduk itself?

Choice in the village is limited. Most travellers rent in Ubud, Canggu or Lovina and ride up, or ask for delivery to their guesthouse — the admin confirms availability and any distance fee on WhatsApp before you book.

Is a 110 cc scooter enough for Munduk?

Solo and light, it will get there, but a 125–160 cc scooter such as a Vario, NMAX or PCX is much more comfortable and safer on the long climbs and descents, especially two-up.

How long does it take from Munduk to Lovina?

About 45–60 minutes downhill through Banjar. Ride it in daylight and use both brakes gently on the hairpins.

When is the best time to ride around Munduk?

Morning. Fog and rain are more common in the afternoon; aim to finish your riding by about 15:00.

Do I pay a deposit?

No. With SiapPergi you pay in full when the scooter is delivered, and you only show your passport — you keep it.
