Malang is the cool, green base for East Java's volcano country. Batu's apple farms and theme parks are next door, waterfalls like Coban Rondo and Tumpak Sewu are within a day trip, and Mount Bromo — the smoking crater in a sea of sand — is the reason many travellers come at all. Here's how a scooter or car fits into that trip, with honest advice on the Bromo sunrise.

Scooter and car prices in Malang & Batu

Scooter from Malang via TumpangExperienced riders visiting in daylightSteep switchbacks, cold and fog; not for a first-time rider at 2 am
Self-drive car to the park edgeFamilies and groups with a confident driverNarrow mountain roads; private cars can't go everywhere inside the park

Stay overnight near Cemoro LawangSeeing Bromo without a midnight startFrom Malang, this side is reached via Probolinggo — a longer drive

Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park sells entry tickets through its official channel, and it can close or restrict access for volcanic activity or ceremonies such as Yadnya Kasada. Check the current status a day or two before you go.

It can be near freezing at the sunrise viewpoints in the dry season. Bring a warm jacket, gloves and a buff — on a scooter the wind chill is brutal.

What you need

  • Scooter: your home licence must include the motorcycle category (often A, A1 or A2), plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) that also shows the motorcycle category. A car-only licence does not cover a scooter in Indonesia.
  • Car: your home car licence plus an IDP with the car category (B).
  • Carry your passport (or a copy) and the vehicle papers (STNK) that come with the rental.
  • Helmets are compulsory for rider and passenger everywhere in Indonesia — every SiapPergi scooter comes with 2.
  • Police checks happen across Indonesia, not only in Bali; missing documents usually mean a fine. Travel insurers often refuse claims if you rode without the right licence.

Licence and IDP rules can change. Check your licensing authority, your embassy's travel advice and the Indonesian traffic police (Korlantas Polri) before you go.

Riding safely in the highlands

  • Indonesia drives on the left. Keep left, overtake on the right and expect scooters to pass you on both sides.
  • Don't ride after dark on unlit country roads — potholes, animals and unlit trucks are the main risk outside the cities.
  • Rain changes everything: in the wet season (roughly November–March) roads get slippery and visibility drops. Wait out a downpour.
  • Lock the steering and park in attended parking (a small fee) at beaches, markets and viewpoints.
  • Fog: above Tumpang visibility can drop to a few metres. Lights on, slow down, and stop if you can't see the road edge.
  • Descents: use engine braking and both brakes; brakes overheat on long downhills.
  • Afternoon rain is common in the hills even outside the wet season.

Coming from Surabaya or Yogyakarta?

Malang has its own small airport, but many visitors fly into Surabaya (about 90 km away by toll road) or take the train. Coming from Yogyakarta, SiapPergi's Java team also runs a car with driver from YIA airport to Malang or straight to Bromo — quoted on WhatsApp for the route.

How booking works

  1. Message SiapPergi on WhatsApp +62 818-0800-1102 or +62 818-0800-1811 with the model, your dates and where you're staying in Malang or Batu (a Google Maps pin is perfect).
  2. The team confirms availability, the total price and the delivery time — nothing is paid in advance.
  3. The vehicle is delivered to your hotel, guesthouse or villa. Check it together and photograph any scratches.
  4. Show your passport and licence + IDP, pay in rupiah (cash, bank transfer or e-wallet) and ride off. Pick-up at the end is included.
