Bali is a favourite holiday for Japanese travellers, and riding a scooter is the easiest way to explore. The tricky part is matching your licence class to the scooter size. Here's a clear guide.

Which Japanese licence covers which scooter

Your licenceWhat you can ride in Bali
普通免許 (car) onlyNot enough — Bali rental scooters are 110 cc or more
普通二輪 小型限定 (up to 125 cc)110–125 cc: BeAT, Scoopy, Vario 125, Fazzio
普通二輪 (up to 400 cc) or 大型二輪All scooters incl. NMAX 155, PCX 160, ADV 160

Licence rules and how they are checked abroad can change. Confirm with your prefectural licence centre and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs travel information before you go.

Getting the international permit

  1. Apply at your prefecture's driver's licence centre or an eligible police station.
  2. Bring your licence, passport and a photo; pay the fee.
  3. Check that the motorcycle category is marked.
  4. Carry it with your Japanese licence — the permit alone is not valid.

Not licensed for motorcycles? Don't gamble: a car with driver, a rental car or ride-hailing is safer for you and your insurance.

How booking works

  1. Pick a scooter in the catalogue (or tell us your height, route and how many riders and we'll suggest one).
  2. Send your dates, the hotel or villa name with a Google Maps pin, and your WhatsApp number.
  3. The admin confirms the bike, the total price and the delivery time — no payment yet.
  4. The scooter arrives with 2 helmets. Check it together, show your passport and licence, then pay in full (bank transfer or e-wallet).

Book on WhatsApp or via the Bali scooter rental catalogue: the bike is delivered to your hotel or villa and you pay when it arrives.

Traffic keeps left as in Japan, but it's busier and less orderly — see Bali scooter safety tips. Related: International Driving Permit for Bali and SiapPergi — Bali scooter rental.
