Jakarta is huge, busy and spread out — the airport alone is in another province. For many visitors the question isn't whether to have a car but whether to drive it yourself. A self-drive car is great for weekend escapes to Bogor, Puncak or Bandung; inside the city, a driver often saves your sanity. Here's an honest guide to both, plus the rules that trip up first-timers.

Car rental prices in Jakarta

SiapPergi's fixed catalogue prices — the same as in Bali — in rupiah. Minimum rental is 2 days.

Rules and costs first-timers miss

  • Odd-even (ganjil-genap): on designated main roads, at weekday peak hours, only cars whose plate ends in an odd number may drive on odd dates, and even on even dates. Rental cars are not exempt. Check the current roads and hours before you go, and ask the team which plate your car has.
  • Toll roads are cashless: you pay with a prepaid e-money card. Ask about it when you book.
  • Parking: malls and hotels have paid car parks; on the street, attendants collect a small fee.
  • Some roads restrict motorcycles — follow the signs if you ride a scooter.
  • Indonesia drives on the left, and scooters will pass on both sides.

Plan around rush hours (roughly 6–10 am and 4–8 pm on weekdays). A 15 km trip can take 20 minutes at 11 am and well over an hour at 6 pm.

What about a scooter in Jakarta?

Experienced riders who are used to dense traffic can get around much faster on a scooter — SiapPergi scooters start at IDR 70,000/day (scooter rental in Jakarta). If you've never ridden in Asian city traffic, Jakarta is not the place to learn: use ride-hailing motorbike taxis instead, and rent a scooter later in a quieter destination.

What you need

  • Scooter: your home licence must include the motorcycle category (often A, A1 or A2), plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) that also shows the motorcycle category. A car-only licence does not cover a scooter in Indonesia.
  • Car: your home car licence plus an IDP with the car category (B).
  • Carry your passport (or a copy) and the vehicle papers (STNK) that come with the rental.
  • Helmets are compulsory for rider and passenger everywhere in Indonesia — every SiapPergi scooter comes with 2.
  • Police checks happen across Indonesia, not only in Bali; missing documents usually mean a fine. Travel insurers often refuse claims if you rode without the right licence.

Licence and IDP rules can change. Check your licensing authority, your embassy's travel advice and the Indonesian traffic police (Korlantas Polri) before you go.

How booking works

  1. Message SiapPergi on WhatsApp +62 818-0800-1102 or +62 818-0800-1811 with the model, your dates and where you're staying in Jakarta (a Google Maps pin is perfect).
  2. The team confirms availability, the total price and the delivery time — nothing is paid in advance.
  3. The vehicle is delivered to your hotel, guesthouse or villa. Check it together and photograph any scratches.
  4. Show your passport and licence + IDP, pay in rupiah (cash, bank transfer or e-wallet) and ride off. Pick-up at the end is included.

Frequently asked questions

How much is car rental in Jakarta?

From IDR 310,000 per day for a Honda Brio or Toyota Calya; 7-seaters IDR 360,000–IDR 410,000 per day. Minimum 2 days, pay when the car is handed over.

Can I pick up the car at Soekarno-Hatta Airport?

Yes. The car can be delivered to the airport (in Tangerang) or to your hotel or apartment. Send your flight details on WhatsApp.

Is it a good idea to drive yourself in Jakarta?

For weekend trips out of the city, yes. For meetings and sightseeing in the centre at rush hour, a car with driver or public transport is usually less stressful.

Does the odd-even rule apply to rental cars?

Yes. On designated roads at weekday peak hours your plate number decides whether you can drive on that date. Check the current rules and ask which plate your car has.

Do I need an International Driving Permit in Jakarta?

Yes: your home car licence plus an IDP with the car category. With a car and driver you don't need one.
