Bali is one of the most popular long-haul trips for Germans, and most visitors want the freedom of a scooter. The rules are simple once you know which part of your Führerschein counts. Here's what German licence holders need, the B196 trap, and how to get a bike delivered to your villa without paying anything up front.

What a German rider needs in Bali

DocumentWhy it matters
EU card licence (Kartenführerschein) with class A1, A2 or AProves you may ride a motorcycle — Bali scooters (110–160 cc) count as motorcycles
International Driving Permit showing the motorcycle classPolice in Indonesia expect it next to your licence
PassportShown at handover and at police checks
Travel insurance (Auslandskrankenversicherung) that covers ridingHospital bills after a crash abroad can be very high

Rules can change. Check the German Foreign Office (Auswärtiges Amt) travel advice for Indonesia and your Führerscheinstelle shortly before you travel.

The B196 trap

Since 2020, German car drivers can add the code 196 to class B after a short training course and then ride light motorcycles up to 125 cc — but this extension is only valid inside Germany. It isn't class A1, and your international permit won't list motorcycles. In Bali that means you'd be riding without a valid licence, and your travel insurer may refuse a claim.

Class AM (mopeds up to 50 cc) isn't enough either: almost every rental scooter in Bali is 110 cc or more.

Getting the international permit

  1. Contact the Führerscheinstelle of your city or district (many offer online appointments).
  2. Bring your card licence, ID or passport and a biometric passport photo; pay the fee.
  3. Check that the motorcycle category is marked on the permit.
  4. Carry it together with your card licence — the permit alone is not valid.

If you're not licensed to ride, don't gamble: a car with driver or ride-hailing is safer for you and your insurance.

Riding tips for Germans

  • Indonesia drives on the left — read riding on the left in Bali before your first ride.
  • Traffic is less rule-bound than at home: expect bikes overtaking on both sides and use your horn lightly to signal.
  • Wear the helmet every time and close the chin strap; police check helmets often.
  • Never ride after drinking — and avoid unknown roads at night.

Frequently asked questions

Can I rent a scooter in Bali with a German driving licence?

Yes, if your licence includes class A1, A2 or A and you carry an international driving permit that shows the motorcycle class.

Is B196 valid in Bali?

No. The B196 extension only applies inside Germany. Abroad you need a real motorcycle class (A1, A2 or A).

Where do I get an international driving permit in Germany?

At your local Führerscheinstelle (driving licence office). Apply before you travel — it can't be issued in Bali.

Do I have to pay a deposit or leave my passport?

Not with SiapPergi. You pay in full when the scooter is delivered, and you only show your passport — you keep it.

Can I pay in euros?

Payment is in rupiah by bank transfer or e-wallet. Euro prices on our pages are estimates only.
