Every winter, thousands of Canadians swap snow for Bali — and a scooter is the easiest way to explore the island. The good news: renting one is simple if your paperwork is right. Here's exactly what a Canadian licence holder needs, what doesn't count, and how to get a bike delivered to your villa without paying anything up front.

What a Canadian rider needs in Bali

DocumentWhy it matters
Provincial licence with a full motorcycle class (Class 6, 6A/6B/6C, M or your province's equivalent)Proves you're licensed to ride a motorcycle — Bali scooters count as motorcycles
International Driving Permit (IDP) from CAA, showing the motorcycle categoryThe translation police in Indonesia expect next to your licence
PassportShown at handover and at police checks
Travel insurance that covers riding a scooterHospital bills after a crash abroad can be very high

Licence classes differ between provinces, and rules can change. Check your provincial licensing office, CAA and the Government of Canada travel advice for Indonesia shortly before you fly.

Getting your IDP from CAA

  1. Find a CAA office (you don't need to be a member in most clubs, but members may pay less).
  2. Bring your valid Canadian driver's licence, two passport-style photos and the fee.
  3. Make sure the motorcycle category is stamped on the IDP — not only cars.
  4. Carry the IDP together with your physical licence; the IDP alone is not valid.

Get the IDP before you leave Canada. It can't be issued once you're in Bali, and online "international licences" from unofficial websites are not recognised.

What does NOT count

  • A Class 5 / G licence (car only) — even for a 110 cc scooter.
  • A learner or novice motorcycle stage such as 6L or M1, which carries restrictions at home.
  • An IDP that only covers cars.
  • A photo of your licence without the original card.

If you're not licensed to ride, don't gamble: a car with driver or ride-hailing is safer for you and your insurance.

Which scooter suits Canadians in Bali?

First time on a scooter in traffic? Start with a light Honda BeAT or Scoopy. Riding two-up or heading to Ubud and Kintamani? An NMAX or PCX gives more power and comfort. Staying a month or more (snowbirds, remote workers)? The monthly rate is far cheaper per day — see monthly scooter rental.

How booking works with SiapPergi

  1. Pick a scooter in the catalogue (or tell us your height, route and how many riders and we'll suggest one).
  2. Send your dates, the hotel or villa name with a Google Maps pin, and your WhatsApp number.
  3. The admin confirms the bike, the total price and the delivery time — no payment yet.
  4. The scooter arrives with 2 helmets. Check it together, show your passport and licence, then pay in full (bank transfer or e-wallet).

Book on WhatsApp or via the Bali scooter rental catalogue: the bike is delivered to your hotel or villa and you pay when it arrives.

Riding tips for Canadians

  • Indonesia drives on the left — read riding on the left in Bali before your first ride.
  • Wear the helmet every time and keep the chin strap closed; police check helmets often.
  • Avoid riding at night on unfamiliar roads, and never after drinking.
  • Rain in the wet season (roughly November–March) comes fast: slow down and carry a raincoat.

Frequently asked questions

Can I rent a scooter in Bali with a Canadian driver's licence?

Yes, if your provincial licence includes a full motorcycle class and you carry an International Driving Permit from CAA that shows the motorcycle category.

Where do Canadians get an International Driving Permit?

From CAA offices across Canada. Bring your licence, two passport photos and the fee. Get it before you travel — it can't be issued in Bali.

Is a Class 5 or G licence enough for a scooter?

No. Those are car licences. In Bali a scooter is a motorcycle, so you need motorcycle entitlement on your licence and IDP.

Do I need to pay a deposit or leave my passport?

Not with SiapPergi. You pay in full when the scooter is delivered and you only show your passport — you keep it.

How fast can a scooter be delivered?

Often the same day when a bike is available. Message us on WhatsApp with your dates and location and we'll confirm the time.
