Kuta and Legian are the closest hotel areas to Bali's Ngurah Rai Airport, so plenty of travellers want to ride straight from arrivals to the hotel. It's a short ride, but a busy one: big junctions, one-way loops and luggage to think about. Here's the route, how long it takes, what fits on a scooter, and when you're better off starting in a car.

Distance and time

DestinationApprox. distanceApprox. time
Tuban (Jl. Kartika Plaza)±2–3 km±5–10 min
Kuta (Kuta Beach, Jl. Pantai Kuta)±3–5 km±10–15 min
Legian (Jl. Legian, Jl. Padma, Double Six)±7 km±20 min
Seminyak±10 km±30 min

Estimates for normal traffic — the late afternoon and weekends can double them. Going further? See Bali airport to Seminyak by scooter.

The route, step by step

  1. Follow the airport exit signs towards Kuta.
  2. Pass the big junction near the airport (the Gatotkaca statue area) and continue onto Jl. Raya Tuban.
  3. For hotels in Tuban and south Kuta, turn towards the beach around Jl. Kartika Plaza.
  4. For central Kuta and Legian, carry on north; most streets here are one-way, so your route back will differ.
  5. For north Legian, an alternative is via the Simpang Dewa Ruci roundabout and Sunset Road, entering from the east.

Mount your phone before you leave: a phone holder is an add-on for IDR 20,000 per booking.

One-way streets: why the way back is different

Kuta and Legian run on one-way streets, including Jl. Legian and Jl. Pantai Kuta. Your route from the airport to the hotel and from the hotel back to the airport will often differ and can feel like a detour. Never ride against the flow, even for a few metres — it's dangerous and you can be fined. If you get lost, pull over somewhere safe and check the map instead of stopping in the lane.

The most relaxed time to ride out of the airport is the middle of the day, outside the afternoon rush. Landing late in the afternoon? Expect a slower ride and don't hurry.

When to start with a car instead

  • You have big suitcases or more than one bag each.
  • You land at night after a long flight, or into heavy rain.
  • You're travelling with young children.
  • You've never ridden in heavy traffic or on the left.

Options: the airport transfer to your hotel with the scooter delivered later, or a self-drive car delivered to Bali Airport from IDR 310,000/day. Landing late? Read landing in Bali at night.
