The Honda Vario is one of the bikes you will see most often at Bali rentals, and for good reason. It is still compact enough for the lanes of Canggu and Ubud, yet powerful enough for two people and moderate climbs. Rentals usually offer two versions, 125 cc and 160 cc. This guide explains the difference, the routes that suit each version, and small habits that make your trip safer.

Why the Vario is popular at Bali rentals

  • Liquid-cooled engine. Engine temperature stays more stable in long traffic jams in Canggu or on Ubud's climbs.
  • Light and compact. At about 112–117 kg, it is still easy to push and park in tight spots.
  • Neutral riding position. Comfortable for riders big and small, and the seat is long enough for a passenger.
  • Fair rental price. Usually only some ten to twenty thousand rupiah per day more than a BeAT.

Estimated market rentalRp75–100k/daySlightly above the Vario 125

The difference of about 4 PS is most noticeable when riding two-up on long climbs and when overtaking on main roads. For getting around South Bali, the Vario 125 is enough. Specifications can vary slightly by year and version, and Vario 160 availability depends on the rental, so state the version you want when you book.

The simple rule: choose the Vario 125 if you mostly ride solo or only ride two-up in South Bali. Choose the Vario 160 if you ride two-up and plan at least one day in the highlands. If the rental only has a Vario 125 and you are heading to Kintamani as a pair, stepping up to an NMAX makes more sense than pushing a small engine up the climbs.

Vario vs BeAT, Scoopy and NMAX

ModelEstimated market rental per dayBest for
Honda BeATRp60–80kSolo, short distances, budget
Honda ScoopyRp70–90kRetro style, short to medium distances
Honda Vario 125Rp75–100kSolo or two-up, medium distances
Yamaha NMAX 155Rp120–150kTwo-up, climbs, long trips

If you are torn between the smaller scooters, read BeAT vs Scoopy. If you are considering a bigger class, read NMAX vs PCX. A summary of all models is in the best scooters for touring Bali.

Routes that suit the Vario

RouteVario 125Vario 160
Kuta – Seminyak – CangguIdealIdeal
Canggu – Uluwatu (Bukit climbs)Suitable, still comfortable two-upMore relaxed two-up
Ubud – Tegallalang – TampaksiringSuitableSuitable
Ubud – KintamaniFine solo, feels strained two-up on climbsSuitable for two
South Bali – Bedugul – MundukSolo onlyStill reasonable two-up
East Bali loop (Lempuyang, Amed)SoloTwo-up, ABS helps on descents

In hilly areas such as Uluwatu and Ubud, the Vario's advantage over the BeAT is most noticeable.

Storage, luggage and passengers

  • The 18-litre storage fits a raincoat, water bottle, wallet and small items. A half-face helmet sometimes fits, depending on its size.
  • The hook on the front deck is good for light shopping bags. Do not hang heavy bags, as they can affect steering.
  • Suitcases cannot be carried safely. Ask the rental to deliver the scooter to your accommodation after you check in.
  • Passengers: make sure the rear footpegs are folded out and your passenger wears a helmet. Two adults with backpacks is still a reasonable load for a Vario.

Features you should know

  • Idling Stop System (ISS) on some versions: the engine switches off automatically when you stop for a few seconds and restarts when you twist the throttle. You can turn it off with a switch on the handlebar if you are not used to it.
  • Side-stand switch: the engine will not start while the side stand is down. If the scooter will not start, check this first.
  • Smart key is used on some Vario 160 versions. Keep the fob in your pocket, not in the storage compartment.
  • Fuel gauge: the 5.5-litre tank empties quickly on hilly routes. Refill when the needle nears a quarter.

Before setting off, do a simple brake test on a quiet road: brake with front and rear from 20 km/h. The scooter should stop in a straight line without loud squealing. If the brakes feel weak, ask for another unit. The full guide is in checking a rental scooter at handover.

Saving fuel on a Vario

Honda claims the Vario 125 can do more than 50 km per litre, but real-world use in Bali's traffic and hills is usually thirstier. At an estimated 40–45 km per litre, one 5.5-litre tank is enough for about 200–250 km. Information on petrol stations and fuel types is in fuel, petrol stations & scooter parking in Bali.

How to book

The Vario is one of the most widely available models, but in peak season Vario 160 units go quickly. FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the Vario 125 and Vario 160 for travellers?

The Vario 160 is more powerful (15.4 PS vs 11.1 PS), so it is more relaxed two-up on climbs such as Kintamani and Bedugul. The tank and storage are the same: 5.5 litres and 18 litres.

How much does it cost to rent a Vario in Bali?

The estimated market price for a Vario 125 is around Rp75–100k per day. The Vario 160 is usually slightly more. Weekly and monthly rentals are cheaper per day.

Is a Vario strong enough for two people to Kintamani?

The Vario 160 is strong enough for two. The Vario 125 can do it, but feels strained on long climbs. If you often ride two-up to the highlands, consider an NMAX or PCX.

Does a helmet fit in the Vario's storage?

The 18-litre compartment sometimes fits a half-face helmet, depending on its size. A full-face helmet usually does not fit.

Why does the Vario's engine switch off at red lights?

That is the Idling Stop System (ISS) on some versions. The engine restarts when you twist the throttle. You can turn the feature off with a switch on the handlebar.
