In Canggu and Uluwatu, an automatic scooter with a surfboard strapped to its side is an everyday sight. A side surf rack lets you chase waves from spot to spot without renting a car. The catch: not every rental scooter comes with a rack, not every board is safe to carry, and crosswinds on open roads can take you by surprise. This article explains how to rent a scooter with a surf rack in Bali, roughly what it costs, and how to carry your board safely.

What is a scooter surf rack?

A surf rack is a steel or aluminium frame bolted to the scooter's frame, usually near the passenger footrest, rising up into rubber- or foam-padded clamps. The board sits upright in those clamps, parallel to the bike, and is tied down with rubber straps. Because it's on one side only, you can still carry one passenger.

These racks are made by local welding workshops, not factory accessories. That means quality varies: some are sturdy with thick padding, others are loose with torn foam. Checking the rack is as important as checking the brakes.

Which scooters are best for carrying a board?

ModelEstimated market price/dayBest forNotes
Honda Scoopy±Rp70–90kShortboards, Canggu spotsLight and easy to park; enough power for flat roads
Honda BeAT±Rp60–80kShortboards, short distancesThe cheapest; feels heavy on hills with a passenger + board
Honda Vario 125±Rp75–100kShortboards–funboards, Canggu to UluwatuMore power to spare, a balanced choice
Yamaha NMAX / Honda PCX±Rp120–160kFunboards, long distancesMore stable on the bypass and the Bukit's hills
Kawasaki KLX 150±Rp180–250kSpots reached by dirt roadsFor riders experienced with manual-clutch bikes

For most surfers, a Vario or Scoopy is enough. If you often head to the Bukit Peninsula (Uluwatu, Padang Padang, Bingin), the climbs are long, so a Vario or NMAX feels more comfortable than a 110 cc bike.

How much does a scooter with a surf rack cost?

There's no standard rate. Some rentals in Canggu and Uluwatu have permanent racks on some of their units and charge nothing extra; others add a small daily fee or fit a rack on request. Because units with racks are limited, mention that you need one from the start, along with your board size.

Board sizes that are safe to carry

  • Shortboard (about 5'6"–6'6"): the safest; the ends don't stick out far beyond the front and back of the bike.
  • Fish, hybrid, funboard (about 6'6"–8'): still commonly carried, but watch the nose when cornering and entering narrow lanes.
  • Longboard (9' and up): not recommended. The board sticks out a long way, snags easily and is strongly affected by crosswinds. Consider a car transfer or renting a board at the spot.
  • Two boards at once: only if the rack is actually designed for two boards and they're tied down tightly. Never stack boards without securing them.

Bear in mind that Indonesia's motorcycle load rules (Government Regulation PP 74/2014, Article 10) limit loads to no wider than the handlebars and require them to be placed behind the rider. Side racks are common in Bali, but a board sticking out excessively could be considered dangerous. Choose a rack that sits close to the body and a board that isn't too long.

How to load and carry your board safely

  1. Check the rack at handover: bolts tight, frame doesn't wobble, foam or rubber padding intact so your board doesn't get scratched.
  2. Load the board with the fins at the back, facing outward, away from your legs and the exhaust. Remove the fins if they come out easily (FCS/Futures) for extra safety.
  3. Tie it at two points with rubber straps or tie-downs: near the lower and upper rack. Shake the board; if it still moves, tighten again.
  4. Use a board sock or thin boardbag if you have one, to reduce rub from the rack and sun damage.
  5. Slow down in crosswinds, especially on open roads such as Jalan Raya Uluwatu and the bypass. The board acts like a sail.
  6. Leave more room when overtaking, because your bike is now wider. Avoid squeezing between cars.
  7. Watch the board's ends when parking: don't let them knock other bikes or pedestrians.

Wax melting in the Bali sun can stick to the seat and your shorts. Carry the board with the deck (waxed side) facing the bike, and keep a small wax comb under the seat.

Keeping your board and bike safe while you're in the water

  • Park in a ticketed area and lock the handlebars. A bike with a board attracts attention.
  • Don't leave your board on the rack if you'll be away a long time; take it to the beach or leave it at a warung (small café) you know.
  • Keep the key in a zipped or tethered pocket, or leave it with a friend on land. A scooter key lost in the surf means a duplicate fee and wasted time.
  • Don't leave documents (STNK, passport) under the seat while you surf.

Damage you're often charged for

A rack bolted to the frame adds weak points. If the bike falls, the rack can bend and the side panels get scratched. This kind of damage is usually the renter's responsibility. Photograph the rack and the bodywork on the rack side at handover, then read the damage rules in deposits, insurance & damage on Bali scooter rentals.

Not used to riding with a side load? Practise for 10 minutes on a quiet road first: turning left and right, stopping, and U-turns. The weight feels different from an unloaded bike.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do all scooter rentals in Bali have surf racks?

No. Racks are easiest to find in Canggu, Kuta and Uluwatu, and units with racks are limited. Mention that you need a rack and your board size when booking.

How much extra does a surf rack cost?

It varies: some rentals charge nothing because the rack is already fitted, others add a small daily fee. Make sure you have the total price in writing before paying.

Can I carry a longboard on a scooter?

Not recommended. Longboards of 9 feet and up stick out a long way and are easily caught by crosswinds. Use a car for a longboard or rent a board at the spot.

Which scooter is best for surfing in Uluwatu?

A Vario 125 or NMAX, because they have enough power for the Bukit's climbs while carrying a board. The Scoopy and BeAT suit flat spots in Canggu and Kuta.

Can I carry a passenger as well as a board?

Yes, one passenger, since the rack is on one side. Make sure the passenger wears a helmet and their legs don't touch the board or fins.
