West Nusa Penida is the reason most people cross over from Sanur: the T-Rex-shaped cliff at Kelingking, the rock arch of Broken Beach, the natural pool at Angel's Billabong and the calm bay of Crystal Bay. On a scooter you can see all four in one day, as long as you start early, visit them in the right order and respect the island's still-challenging roads.

West or east?

Nusa Penida is too big to see everything in a day. The west side has the most famous photo spots and is closer to the main harbours. The east side (Diamond Beach, Atuh, the Tree House) is further away and the roads are tougher — that route is covered in the east Nusa Penida scooter route. If you only have one day, choose the west.

Getting there and renting a scooter

The fast boat from Sanur takes about 30–45 minutes and docks at Toyapakeh, Banjar Nyuh or Sampalan depending on the operator — check Sanur to Nusa Penida boat tickets. Scooter rentals usually wait at the harbour. Prices and how to rent are covered in scooter rental in Nusa Penida.

  • Choose a scooter with brakes that really bite and tyres that still have tread — you'll be riding down a lot of steep roads.
  • A 125–155cc automatic handles the climbs better than a 110cc, especially with a passenger.
  • Fill the tank before you set off; petrol stations are limited and roadside bottled fuel costs more.
  • Save the rental's WhatsApp number for emergencies.

Recommended order

StopDestinationApprox. time from previous stopNotes
1Kelingking Beach±45–60 min from the harbourArrive early; parking and the viewpoint fill up fast
2Broken Beach (Pasih Uug)±30–45 minBumpy road on some stretches
3Angel's BillabongRight next to Broken BeachA few minutes' walk
4Crystal Bay±30–40 minSwimming and snorkelling in the bay; lunch stop
5Back to the harbour±20–40 minCheck the last boat time before you leave

Riding times are estimates only — tour-vehicle jams on narrow roads and road conditions can make them longer. Leave at least an hour of buffer before the last boat.

Kelingking Beach

The view of the T-Rex cliff from the top is worth the trip on its own. The path down to the beach is very steep, narrow and slippery in places; only go down if you're fit, wearing shoes with good grip, and carrying water. Many visitors are happy just enjoying the view from the top. Don't climb over the fence or stand at the cliff edge for a photo.

Broken Beach and Angel's Billabong

Broken Beach is a circular cove with a rock arch where the sea flows in. A few minutes' walk away, Angel's Billabong is a natural pool on the edge of the ocean. Don't swim in Angel's Billabong at high tide or when the waves are big: a swell can surge in suddenly and drag people out to sea. Follow the signs and local staff's instructions.

Crystal Bay

This white-sand bay is the perfect place to cool off after the ride: swim, snorkel in the calm section, then eat at a beach warung (small local eatery). Currents outside the bay can be strong — stay close to shore and never swim alone.

Road conditions and who shouldn't ride

Some of Nusa Penida's roads have been improved, but the stretches to the sights are still narrow, sharply steep and potholed in places. Tourist accidents are fairly common. If you're not yet comfortable riding down steep roads with a passenger, hiring a car with a driver on the island is the wiser choice. Riding technique tips are in tips for climbs and descents.

Alternate between the front and rear brakes on long descents. Holding the rear brake the whole way makes it overheat and lose grip.

They're narrow, steep and potholed in places. Safe enough for confident riders; beginners are better off with a car and driver.
